Hi there, thanks in advance for your help.

1. I’m launching a membership site on Living Social and Groupon. What is the best way to collect their coupon codes when they register on the site?

2. Where exactly do I get the coupon codes from? The deal sites?

3. I understand I can use the codes in events. Can I set up multiple events and they can only use the code for one of those events?

Thanks.

~Matt

Hi Matt,

1) I’m not sure I follow here? When running a promotion through Living Social/Groupon the user would basically purchase a ‘Coupon’ code from those sites, which they can then user to redeem services (in this case attend an event) with yourself. So for example, the user purchases a Groupon code from them and is given a unique code from Groupon, the user then goes to you site, inputs this Groupon code when registering for the event and that event becomes free for that registration (as they have already paid Groupon).

2) Living Social/Groupon should provide you with a list of Coupon codes which you can then import into Event Espresso. You can do this in bulk using the Voucher Import Tool

3) Currently any Groupon code can be used on any event that accepts Groupon codes. You can enable multiple events to accept Groupons, but any of those events can use any available Groupon if they have the unique code.

I do have a quick question, are you using Groupon for the full amount of the event or to sell say ‘20% with this Groupon’?

1. The deal is for

  • membership
  • , not for events.

    2. Ok, so they will give me a list, got it.

    3. What I’m looking to do is set up a series of events (say 4 to 8 events) for new members that come in from Groupon/Living Social to attend, but I only want one person to be able to sign up for one of the events. Is there a way to either:

3a. Set it so one code is good for only one event, or
3b. Unlock the second event when the first event fills up, etc.

    Thanks for your reply, Tony,

    ~Matt

    Hi Matt,

Event Espresso’s Social Coupons add on will only work for events not the actual membership to your site. You may need to refer to your membership plugin for guidance on using Groupon etc with it.

Regarding item 3, the coupons can be limited to specific events, say Event A and B allow groupon codes, but event C doesn’t. However they can’t be limited further than that so you couldn’t have code XYZ apply only to event A, it would apply to any event that allows groupon codes.

The closest you could get to a second event opening up would be to use a Waitlist event to capture the overflow from the original event.

Ok, events only and create a waitlist, got it.

    One more question.

    4. Can I have them reuse their coupon codes over and over for different events? Say they use it for one of the above mentioned events for new members now. If they keep their code (if I can get it in their member profile), can they use them again six months from now for another event?

    Hi Matt,

Regular promotion codes (https://eventespresso.com/wiki/promotional-codes/) can be reused and they do not automatically expire.

However, the social coupons are 1 time use so they will expire after they are used.
