WP-Mail-SMTP not working with GMAIL

We have SSL on our site and also have WordPress HTTPS installed. I set up WP-Mail-SMTP and the gmail settings will not work, it gets an error. I tried using the SMTP settings on my server but the customer still receives 2 emails when they register…some get 4.

The FAQ for WP Mail SMTP shows that it does work with Gmail & Google Apps:

If you can’t get it to work even after double-checking your account information, then try using the Postmark or Mailchimp Mandrill services:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/postmark-app-mandrill-transactional-email-handling-services/

They will take over wp_mail.
