Hi again,
I am going to try to upgrade to EE4 again. Last time I was not successful at all and I had to restore the website to EE3. Can someone please tell me what steps should I take to avoid problems. For instance should I deactivate EE3 first and then install and activate EE4? Thank you so much in advance
Ted

Hi Ted,

How are you today?

In general you will be guided through a migration process once you activate EE4, but if you’re using some shortcodes you’ll want to adjust them manually.

See this thread and let us know if have any specific questions: https://eventespresso.com/topic/upgrading-to-ee4-steps/

Thank you Garth,
Last time when I upgraded to EE4 I got so many weird problem ash as my site is live I couldn’t wait to trouble shooting. While I was trying to fix the issue, I was told that I should have deactivated EE3 before installing EE4. Today I decided to give it another try and wanted to avoid all unnecessary problems. I tried to find the answers with no luck!
Can you please just let me know what is the best way to install EE4? I know that EE4 will guide you through, and last time I followed the direction religiously but had some big issues. I don’t mind to change the short cods manually, but how about the email messages? Should I copy the messages and tickets or they are going to be transferred over.
Thank you for your time
Ted

Hi Ted,

Could you summarize the issues that you ran into earlier?

Email messages are not migrated as there is a new messages system in place that offers customization to a handful of email notifications to multiple recipients.

Hi Lorenzo,
You had helped me before but I didn’t have time to wait for solving the problems.this link tells you about my previous issues with EE4;
https://eventespresso.com/topic/ee4-removed-the-preview-button/
If I deactivate EE3 and then install EE4 will I get the same problems?
Cheers, Ted

Thanks, I was aware of that but I didn’t know if you were referring to something else. The preview button issue was already corrected.

You’ll be prompted to migrate to EE4 after activating Event Espresso 4 through WordPress plugins.

Keep in mind that there are shortcodes for EE3 that are not available for EE4 or they have been changed.

Other than the core shortcodes for the Event Espresso pages, which ones are you using?

Hi Lorenzo,
I upgraded to EE4 and got the some error messages, a long list of them! But anyway after activating EE4 the event registration page was empty. I checked the short code and it was correct. Here are some screenshots that I got during migration;

I tested it with theme test-drive and a wp theme, I got the same problem.

Anyway as I mentioned the site is live so I had to restored back again. Please let me know what I had done wrong and how to fix the problem as I really like to use new features in EE4.

Hi Ted,

In EE4 the event registration page should be empty when you visit it because you haven’t started a registration yet. In EE4, the list of events is displayed on http://yoursite.com/events instead of on an event registration page. The two are separate in EE4.

Ted Karlsalr

Thank you Josh. So I need to make another page to show the events and then after selecting the workshop it will go to registration page. Am I correct?

Ted Karlsalr

And did you have a chance to look at the screenshots? Are they ok?

Hi Ted,

Making a new page is optional because WordPress takes care of the list of events for you. I did view the screenshots and all I could discern was the migration had some trouble migrating some of the older attendee data. That may be the case if you’ve had any prior customization done to EE3’s attendee record database tables.

Thanks Josh, I want to display a short description of all coming events in a page like this:
http://omnilargess.com/event-registration/
What should I add to achieve this? I put the short code that was on critical page but did not get any

I am going to try it again tomorrow and will appreciate your help.

Hi Ted,

What you can do is copy the contents of that page before the migration, then paste the contents of that page into a new page (not on the registration checkout page, a new page) after the migration.

The event content will look a bit different, but you’ll have the same short description on a page. Along with that, you can change what info is included on the event list by going into Event Espresso 4’s template settings and configuring the event list display settings.

Thank you Josh I am going to try it again tomorrow. Just for my lack of knowledge, what short code should I use for showing all events in the new page? is it EESPRESSO-EVENTS?

Yes, you can verify this in our ee4 shortcode documentation:

Hi Josh Thank you for your help. I installed the EE4 and testing it right now. One question though, where can I find the “Feature Image” to add an image to the event list
Thanks

Ted Karlsalr

Hi Josh, How can I set the Feature Image for an event? I can not find the it anywhere

Hi Ted,

When adding or editing an event, the Featured Image box should be in the right hand column, normally near the bottom of it.

If you cannot see it, please go to the top right of the screen and click Screen Options. Some checkboxes should appear, make sure that the Featured Image checkbox is ticked: screenshot http://take.ms/3m5P9

Hi Dean,
Here is a screenshot of screen options. I don’t have featured Image check box at all.;

What can I do now?

Hi,

In this case, your theme may not support a featured image:

http://cl.ly/image/1u0y12391b13

However, you should be able to insert an image in the event description area within the event editor.

That is not cool! I tried with ice mocha and had the same problem. Even iced mocha did not show the featured image. I want to use the featured image in event list and insetting an image to the event does not show in the event list

How about a default WordPress theme?

If it doesn’t work with those, then it could be another plugin interfering.

I tested with 2014 with the same result! It worked on EE3 that is why I have some upcoming classes with featured images. I deactivated all plugins but EE4 and still could not see the Feature image option.
Any suggestions?

Could you try deactivating all plugins and reactivating Event Espresso?

Is it possible to get your login details in order to look into this?

If so, please send them via https://eventespresso.com/send-login-details/

NOTE: login details need to be Admin level and FTP details are appreciated.

I just sent you the WP login info. Please help fix this problem as I really love EE4

Ted Karlsalr

July 29, 2014 at 1:17 pm

And also I created a test event under your admin login for you to look at and fix the problem. Thank you so much I need to post some workshops and waiting for you to fix the featured image problem

Hi Ted,

I’m afraid that the Karma theme is what’s causing the featured image feature to not work here. If you switch to the twentyfourteen theme with the theme test drive plugin installed, you’ll see the option to set a featured image.

I can suggest contacting the author of the Karma theme and ask them to change their theme to allow other custom post types to use featured images. If they can’t help, we can dig through the Karma theme code and change it. This will take some time and development resources so we’ll require FTP access and a 30 minute priority support token to do the job.

Thanks Josh. True Theme developer team members are awesome. They helped me out to fix the problem. Thank you so much for trouble shooting it for me. I think you guys should consider working with true theme developers as both of you are awesome

Cheers,
Ted
