Tax to be paid even if promotion value is high enough

Dear support team,

Customers are reaching out to us saying that their promotion code still lets them pay money for their order. We checked this issue and see that the tax is neglected in the promotion. I.e.: order value € 300,-, promotion code value € 325,-, tax to be paid € 18,-. However: I need the promotion also to cover the tax. Meaning that as long as product cost + tax < promotion value, no payment is required.

In the settings, the affect taxes option is set to no, but this shouldn’t be the problem since € 300,- – € 325,- means nothing to be paid, and tax over nothing is nothing.

The amount to be paid is the tax percentage over the initial order value.

See http://www.panoramarail.nl/temp/IMG_9107.JPG

Do you know what is wrong here?

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Luc

Hi Luc,

In the settings, the affect taxes option is set to no, but this shouldn’t be the problem since € 300,- – € 325,- means nothing to be paid, and tax over nothing is nothing.

It turns out that the promotions affects taxes option affects the actual order of price application in the calculation. So when it’s set to no, the calculation is as follows:

( $300 * .06 = $18.00 )
+ ( $300 – 325 = $0 ) [EE doesn’t calculate this line to be a negative in order to avoid a negative total]
So $18 + 0 = $18

You can set the Promotions affect tax setting to Yes to make it so the promotion also covers the tax amount.

Dear Josh,

Thanks for this. This is however different than the description in the promotions settings panel, right?
I’ve the problem that the affect taxes setting doesn’t work. If I set it to yes and save, it stays yes. When I navigate to another page and get back to the promotions settings page, it’s on no again…

Hi there,

How is that different from the description?

Regarding the settings not changing, can you try resetting the Promotions settings (it’s the last setting there) then try again?

Dear Josh,

Resetting the promotion settings unfortunately doesn’t solve the problem with the plugin forgetting the tax setting.
Do you know what I could do more to solve this problem?

Best,
Luc

Hi Luc,

If you can send FTP credentials along with WordPress admin level credentials via this form (we recommend setting up temporary credentials if possible) we can investigate why the settings are not working correctly.

Hi Luc,

I tried to look into this, however, after I changed the Promo code/taxes setting to No, the setting has stayed on No after repeated page loads and navigating to another page then over to Promotions settings again.

Dear Josh,

Thanks for your swift reply, although:
– The problem is that the setting won’t stay on “Yes”. It will reset to “No”, not the other way round.
– Usually, it resets after a couple of hours or maybe nighttime. It won’t go wrong directly. For example in case I have to make a booking with a promotion code, I’ll set tax setting to yes, make my booking, which works correctly. When I check a couple of hours later, it’s on “No”. It seems to be a reset after some time or some point in time rather than not saving it at all.

Best,
Luc

So when you earlier said:

If I set it to yes and save, it stays yes. When I navigate to another page and get back to the promotions settings page, it’s on no again

That’s not actually happening then?

Dear Josh,

That’s happening too. It depends from time to time how soon it will switch back. Just now, I had the behavior mentioned before, a direct reset after navigating to another page and then to the promotion settings page. It’s hard for my to find some replicable behavior in this.

I hope this helps in some way.

Best,
Luc

Hi Luc,

Can you try updating to the latest version of the Promotions add-on?

Hi Luc,

Can you send up to date FTP credentials for the site? We may need to put in some logging code that can track down what’s causing those settings to switch.

Dear Josh,

Thanks. I think they were in the previous credentials submission, but I sent you a new entry now. OK?

Best,
Luc

Update:
We found a fix for the Promotions settings getting reset and the fix is included in the latest releases of Event Espresso 4 core and the Promotions add-on. You can update to Event Espresso 4.9.2 and/or Promotions 1.0.7 to get the fix.
