I haven’t checked yet, but does the social coupon integration include Groupon, or is Groupon something unique to EE that I have to join on my own?

How does the Social Coupon Integration function?

Hi Pete,

The Social Coupon addon was originally called the Groupon addon and allwos you to use Groupon and Living Social (possibly others) coupons in your events.

Codes have to be manually added or added via the importer (Event Espresso Social Coupons/Voucher (Groupon) Import Tool Add-on v0.1 — see the Pre Release channel in your account page).

You will need an account with Groupon etc to actually benefit from the codes otherwise you will simply give your customers an 100% discount for no return.

Hi,

I’ve signed up with Groupon and verified my business with them.

I’m guessing I will soon receive instructions on how to enter promotional codes into where they need to be placed – in this case, my Event Espresso “Promotional Code” page.

Once I align or calibrate the Groupon (Promotional) Code within my Event Registration, will it interfere with my other 10% early signup discount that I have included on my pricing and registration pages? In other words, will the Groupon (Promotional) Codes automatically remain separate and unique from that 10% early signup discount?

Also, how visible will the Groupon (Promotional) Codes be on my Registration and Payment Pages?

I worry that customers who have not seen or heard about the Groupon deal will react negatively once they see that a Promotional Code box is available to fill out, and they have no knowledge of the code. For instance, will the Promotional Code just be a blank box for the customer to fill out when he or she is signing up for my course?

A) Is this Promotional Code process not overly difficult for potential customers to handle and figure out?

and

B) Will this Promotional Code be discreet and not call attention to the fact that I do advertise my business on Groupon and offer incredibly gracious deals on my course like 50% off?

Thanks for being incredibly helpful all along the way.

Pete

Hi Pete,

“will it interfere with my other 10% early signup discount”

Yes and no, the Groupon discount is 100%, so it will make your events free, regardless of the other discounts.

They are separate to standard promotional codes and can be turned on/off on a per event basis.

“Also, how visible will the Groupon (Promotional) Codes be on my Registration and Payment Pages?”

It is similar looking to the Promo code box in that it is a simple input field. This is a basic event with the Social Coupons active http://d.pr/i/lId2

If the users are aware of Groupon then they should know what to do but it may be worth while spelling it out to them via the event description or a template edit.

Sorry for late response – so will I be able to run a Groupon promotional code as I simultaneously advertise a 10% early signup discount for my original price of $800. In other words, will people who have not seen the Groupon promotion be able to signup early, receive a 10% discount, and pay $720 while people who have seen the Groupon promotion be able to signup for my course at half the cost or $400? Or do both offers have to run separately?

Also, I have signed up for Groupon and am waiting for my ad to be approved and created. Do I have to wait to receive a promotional code from Groupon once that has taken place?

Hi,

Yes they are separate, the early bird will still function unless of course you add in the Groupon code to get the full discount.

“Do I have to wait to receive a promotional code from Groupon once that has taken place?”

I am not sure of Groupon’s procedures in terms of codes, sorry. You would be best speaking to Groupon directly on that matter.

Hi,

So I’ve finally spoken to Groupon, and from what I gather after my conversation with one of their coding reps, Groupon will either give me 50 individual codes or one uniform code with a second way for me to scan bar codes.

I prefer the easiest possible way to do this, and I think the first option – the 50 individual codes – seems easier than the second.

Also, when I try to make heads or tails of the documentation page, I notice that the “Groupon Codes” option is no longer available… Which Add-on am I using to input the Groupon Codes if that one is missing?

And, if I received 50 individual codes from Groupon, you mentioned, Dean, that I could use the importer : i.e. the “Event Espresso Social Coupons/Voucher (Groupon) Import Tool Add-on v0.1”. I’m having a little trouble locating that on my Account page.

I just need all of these issues cleared up on my end, so I can utilize Groupon.com to continue promoting my business.

Thanks,

Pete

Hi Pete,

Just to clarify a couple things.

In other words, will people who have not seen the Groupon promotion be able to signup early, receive a 10% discount, and pay $720 while people who have seen the Groupon promotion be able to signup for my course at half the cost or $400?

The way it works with Groupon is your customers pay Groupon. Then you claim the monies from Groupon on an individual basis using the codes you have been given.

So yes the above is correct, but as customers have already paid Groupon they go to your site, input the Groupon code to your site and then for that user the event becomes ‘Free’ and allows them to register your other Promotion codes will continue to work as normal for others.

Do I have to wait to receive a promotional code from Groupon once that has taken place?

Yes, you’ll received a list of Codes from Groupon. You should receive a list of codes each evening. My advice is to wait until the Groupon promotion is finished before adding the codes to your site if you add them nightly you will end up with many duplicates as Groupon no longer sorts or differentiates each days coupons.

I prefer the easiest possible way to do this, and I think the first option – the 50 individual codes – seems easier than the second.

That is the easiest option, but again just to clarify (based on previous use of Groupon). Groupon will give you 50 individual codes which you then put into Event Espresso (the ‘Groupon Code’) these codes do NOT allow you yourself to claim back monies, they allow you to reference that a user has a Groupon and make an event free for 1 single use. To claim you also need the ‘Security Code’ from the Groupon voucher.

You can either ask for this when the event is due (so all attendee must bring a printout of their Groupon voucher)

OR

Add a ‘Security Code’ question to your Groupon event (which attendees can fill in when registering so you already have) however you can not make this field required as other user without a Groupon will not have this information, so you may need to ‘follow up’ some Groupon attendees to request their Security Code.

Which Add-on am I using to input the Groupon Codes if that one is missing?

The ‘Groupon Add-on’ has been renamed to the ‘Social Coupon Intergration Add-on’ as it can be used for more than just Groupon now. It is available through your Account Page.

And, if I received 50 individual codes from Groupon, you mentioned, Dean, that I could use the importer : i.e. the “Event Espresso Social Coupons/Voucher (Groupon) Import Tool Add-on v0.1?. I’m having a little trouble locating that on my Account page.

This Add-on is available through the Pre-Release Channel

I’ve received all of my Groupon codes, and I’m uploading them now. Is it necessary to fill out the Groupon Holder field? I’m just unsure whether that is mandatory or not… thanks

No it is not mandatory

Just the Group-on code and whether or not it is active is needed.

Hey guys,

So a Groupon rep just emailed me this question:

Kelly McCarthy
To Me
From our redemption team: so the “Enter Voucher code” field is on the page where customer’s put in their information but not their payment info. So I’m afraid that that field won’t zero out the checkout amount, does that make sense? Did the merchant provide any clarification as to how that field relates to the amount charged to the customer?

How should I respond, and will the field zero out the Checkout amount? (In this case $800)

I guess Groupon is nervous that the Voucher Code is located on my initial Event Registration questionnaire page rather than the Payment Page.

Is Groupon right, does the Voucher Code need to be located on the actual Payments Page?

Please let me know thanks!

Pete

Hi Pete,

No the Voucher Code field does not need to be moved. The Event Price is passed from the registration form to the Payment page.

We collect registration information first for varies reasons but one of which is to allow multiple different types of payment methods.

When using the Social Marketing Add-on you enter the Voucher code on registration and the Event Price is zeroed from then on for that registration.

To demonstrate I would manually create a single Groupon code.
Go to Event Espresso -> Groupon Codes. http://d.pr/i/4es5
Click add new Groupon Code and input whatever you like for now (make sure it is Active) http://d.pr/i/xZxj
Now we have a Groupon code http://d.pr/i/3xDw

Then go to your Event with Groupon code enabled and run through a test registration.
http://d.pr/i/zl8F
5 tickets x £20 should be £100

Click submit, the price is now £0.00 x 5 = 0
http://d.pr/i/VJud

Once Confirm is clicked that’s it.
The Groupon code is now ‘used’ and can no longer be used by another.
http://d.pr/i/fHmx

*5 tickets were used just to demonstrate. The same applies with 1.

Does that help?

Yes that answers my question perfectly. Thanks Tony, I’ve already sent your response on to Kelly at Groupon, and she was very appreciative for your thorough and quick response. Cheers!
