Registration status transaction abandoned but Paypal paid

Hi, we’ve just recently updated to plugin to the latest 4.8.38.p. A few registrations have come in ok since then but today there was one that kicked up an error and it is showing transaction status abandoned and the registrant received an email saying transaction failed, when in fact the Paypal payment went thru successfully. When I view the transactions for this registrations, there appears to be 2 of them; one red and one blue. The red one has gateway response: IPN Validation failed! Paypal responded with ‘WP Error. Code: “http_request_failed”, Message: “Couldn’t resolve host ‘www.paypal.com'”, Data: “”‘

The blue one has no other info.

Why did this happen and how to avoid it? And how do I fix this particular registration? Please advise, thanks.

Regards,
Karen

Couldn’t resolve host ‘www.paypal.com’

Basically means that your site could not resolve ‘www.paypal.com’ to any IP address within ‘a timely fashion’ to confirm if the IPN was valid or not, its usually an issue with your host rather than PayPal.

When I view the transactions for this registrations, there appears to be 2 of them; one red and one blue.

Those are 2 payment within a single transaction.

The blue one (I’m assuming it’s the ‘first’ payment at the btop of the list) is likely the Payment EE sets up when you select PayPal as a payment method.

The red one is the IPN varifications failure.

So the payment went through within PayPal and you have confirmed they have actually paid? If so you can manually apply a payment within the transaction to complete the transaction.

However what is the status of the Registration itself? Pending Payment or Approved?

Is this something that’s preventable? If so, what should I check on the host.

I’m not sure why there are 2 payments within the single transaction. It could be possible that the registrant retried. In fact, the first one is the red one with ID 328. And the blue one has ID 329.

Yes, the payment did go thru to Paypal confirmed. How do we apply the payment to the registration?

The status of the registration is blue – Pending Payment.

Thanks,
Karen

You would need to contact your host and have them investigate, however you may find it was a temporary problem. Are payments from PayPal working currently?

Personally I would monitor the next few PayPal payments and see if they work correctly, if not I was still getting a ‘couldn’t resolve host’ errors then contact the host.

If they are refreshing the page to get to PayPal that’s possible yes.

How do we apply the payment to the registration?

Within the transaction do you have a ‘Apply Payment’ button? – http://take.ms/Se1oD

If you click that you can manually apply a payment – http://take.ms/Z88Qd

Set the payment method to PayPal and add the TXN ID from PayPal into the payment, its only a reference for the payment and does not connect to PayPal itself.

Thanks Tony. There were other registrations that were successful after that so I also think it’s intermittent. So I’ll need to fix that registration now.

Because I have 2 payments in that transaction, do I need to delete one first before clicking the ‘Apply Payment’ button?

They should not apply any values to the amount paid value so because they are failed/pending you can actually just leave them, but you if you prefer you can delete them.

Thanks Tony. I’m just trying to do it now and have a question for the part that says ‘Registrations to Apply Payment to:’. Do I click ‘Just the following Registrations’ or ‘All Registrations’?

I’ll explain what that is for so you know, its to allow you to split payments across multiple registrations, a kind of partial payment system for the admin.

Lets say you have a group registraion of 5 people who have registered in a single group but want to pay separately, if they pay the admin and the admin manually applies each payment you can track who has paid across the registrations.

If the payment you received is the full amount, click ‘All Registrations’.

Also note that if you want the registration message (Registration Approved) to be sent when you add the payment, click the ‘Registration Messages’ checkbox I highlighted in my screenshot.

Thanks Tony, you’ve explained it very well. I’ve managed to apply the payment and I think that’s really useful to know.
