PayPal Standard not accepting Mastercard

Is there a reason why the (offsite) Paypal Standard credit card payment options wouldn’t include Mastercard? I see Visa, Discover and Amex when I’m sent there from EE4, but no choice for Mastercard. When you try adding a MC number anyway, it knocks it back as not a valid choice. So, Mastercard doesn’t like being used by PayPal with EE?

PayPal appear to be stumped on this one themselves. Would appreciate input.

There should be no difference between making payments from when EE sends you to PayPal and when another site sends you to PayPal. EE hands over the payment to PayPals servers, so its PayPal that is preventing Mastercards, not EE, which means that there is little we can do our end to help.

However I did a little googling and found these:

https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/About-Business-Archive/Mastercard-Not-Working/td-p/510466

The threads themselves are a little dated, but I don’t suspect PayPal has changed their policies much in that regard.

I would once again recommend contacting PayPal and ask about their ‘security model’ not allowing you to use Mastercards.

Thanks for the prompt reply. We’ve seen those and other references during much trawling to find similar cases (thanks for looking them up though).

Thing is, this is unique to this site, which is the only one using EE’s cart. Other sites using (for instance) Woocommerce or Shopify as carts before checking out through Paypal are not affected this way.

My best guess at the moment is because this is a dating service website the security model associates it with higher likelihood of fraud. But that doesn’t explain why only MC is affected (unless the model is applied differently there).

Still, I wanted to eliminate the EE cart from the list of possible causes.

To me this makes the most sense, Mastercard may have different limitations to others, but that is pure guess work on my part. When it comes to PayPal doing strange things its often a mystery.

I can tell you that in the UK some companies consider payments for any type of ‘event’ a high risk transaction and it would not surprise me if that applies elsewhere at all.

We have seen some strange issues with PayPal accounts randomly not working and then all of a sudden they work (without any changes) and the only reason that has been given by PayPal is ‘security measures’, which I assume is basically the same thing they are talking about in the above threads. We’ve also seen other threads in which PayPal accounts completely lock down for certain areas, with PayPal claiming its nothing on their end, only for the user to report back a couple of days later that PayPal ‘fixed’ it.

I’ll double check this with the developers (due to time differences they are currently offline so this may take a little) but I’m fairly certain there is little to no difference between how we pass the details to PayPal and how Woo or Shopify do, however as mentioned I’ll double check on this shortly.

Thanks. I appreciate your time.

(Something else to bear in mind about PayPal that I didn’t know until recently: it’s effectively 1 giant merchant account used by all PayPal account holders. The arbitrary lockdowns etc are based on the idea that one rogue account can stuff it all up.)

Thanks for the info.

To be honest we’ve started recommending Stripe over PayPal (there’s also Braintree although its still PayPal) , simply because it causes less problems for most users and the transaction fees are almost equivalent up to about $5k per month, but obviously it all depends on the circumstances.

Oddly, Stripe is also a single merchant account but they seem to be far easier to work with (and cheaper). As I understand it though we’d need an add-on to use Stripe, right?

Yes that’s correct. Instead of adding 30+ gateways into Event Espresso 4 core, only a few gateways were built in. Each of the newer gateways, like Stripe, are available for with Event Espresso 4 as a separate add-on.
