Hi,

I’m running Event Espresso 3.1.37.8.P and it has been running and booking events no problem via paypal. Earlier this evening its started having issues with the paypal IPNs with no changes made to anything.

The payment is being made through paypal and the payment type is changed to show paypal but the status remains incomplete and confirmation mails are not sent.

I’ve got the simplified template installed as it has been from the start. When checking the IPN error logs this is the error that is occurring.

Errors resulting from the execution of curl transfer: The requested URL returned error: 403 Forbidden[08/21/2016 10:16 PM] – FAIL: IPN Validation Failed . /cgi-bin/webscr : http://www.paypal.com

When resending the IPN via the IPN history page it seems to go through no problem. This is happening on all events and tickets in the system.

Further to some more testing I think I’ve found the source of the problem. It seems to be some sort of conflict with W3 Total Cache plugin. It had been working fine and no updates done to the plugin but when I switch off all caching then disable this it seems to start working again.

I can leave the site like this and its fine but if it’spossbile to get the caching back up I would prefer this.

I had set it up with all the no cache/exclusion rules required for event espresso.

Seems I may have spoken too soon. Although upon disabling W3 Total Cache I was able to book an event and receive a paypal ipn successfully it has now continued to give the same error. I am not able to repeat the successful transaction.

Hi there,

This error:

Errors resulting from the execution of curl transfer: The requested URL returned error: 403 Forbidden[08/21/2016 10:16 PM] – FAIL: IPN Validation Failed . /cgi-bin/webscr : http://www.paypal.com

Means PayPal are refusing the connection from your server.

On you server, if you go to /wp-content/uploads/espresso/gateways/ do you have any gateways there?

Do you have a sandbox account with PayPal? (I can see you are using a live account currently)

Hi,

I’ve checked the gateways folder and that is empty.

I don’t currently have a sandbox account with paypal as I had setthe site up on a test server and when working just transferred it across and used the live account for this. As it’s been working fine for the past 3 or 4 weeks its just always been on the live account.

I have had one or 2 people manage to successfully book an event and for it to go through today but the majority have had the same issue and I’ve had to manually mark them as completed.

The problem seems to be intermittent as I’ve had 3 transactions complete fine today but another dozen or so that have had this same error. I can see nothing different about the transactions that have been made successfully and those that haven’t.

I’ve also had my web host check they meet the paypal security requirements and they are all up to date with latest updates. the only thing I don’t have at the moment is an SSL cert but paypal have stated that this is not currently needed for the live server.

Hmm, strange.

You mentioned above that if you resend the IPN it goes through fine, do you mean it also sets the registration as complete when doing so or there are no errors from PayPal when you resend?

Are you running any security or spam plugins? WP-Spamsheild for example?

Yes when I resent a transaction that was showing as incomplete (although payment type had already changed to paypal) it was successful and payment status was changed as well as the amount paid.

Neither the original nor the resent ipn showed an error in the paypal ipn history page but the original showed the error I copied above in the paypal error log on the server.

There’s no security plugins running at all. I did have w3 total cache running though I had set exceptions as described here but I have since removed it entirely but I’m still getting these errors.

I am happy to give login details to host and wordpress if that may be easier than going back and forward here.

My hosting provider have just got back to me saying they have had an issue with paypal today that they think should now be resolved.

I’ve had the last 4 bookings made go through and complete with no issues so fingers crossed its now running fine.

If I get more issues with it I’ll report back.
