Worked with Lite.  Not working with paid version.
Tried everything, as far as I can see in the troubleshooting pointers, for settings.  Used the stripped down txnpage.php as the Transactions template, only thing on the page being the [ESPRESSO_TXN_PAGE] tag.
The log shows successful a payment back when I was exploring the Lite version using my ownl verified PayPal business account.  After upgrading the plug in I set up the client’s parameters, they have a business account and they successfully completed the verification on this morning.  But I see nothing in the Espresso log to indicate whey the IPNs are sitting on PayPal in retrying status.  The kicker is that I just changed the settings back to use my original test account and now that fails as well with transactions likewise sitting in the PayPal IPN que with retrying status and nothing in the Espresso log to indicate Espresso sees anything coming in.  (Can’t view the PayPal log, bytehost doesn’t allow that).
For completeness I will mention there is a loop where PayPal says fine I’ll got your money but when I try to return or let PayPal return me, the EE page shows the red circle and after a short time EE sends me back to PayPal to try again.  (Yes, I do show up one time in the attendees list as registered but not paid).
Client wants to go live.  I have to get this working somehow some way.  For now I’m going home.  In the morning I will go through everything again in the using my own business account to see if anything changed overnight or something super obvious becomes suddenly visible.

Possible clue pointing to something haywire when the transactions page is addressed from outside the WP site?

From other posts is seems when attempting to navigate directly to the Transactions page , for example:
http://sample.byteyhost9.com/transactions/
the proper result is simply “ID Not supplied”.   This is the response if instead of “transactions” the page ID is used as in “?page_id=8”.  Also, when viewing the page from within the WordPress interface both work as expected.  But from the outside using “transactions” results in the host returning splash pages advertising web hosting type services which the host does for any incorrect url.

I did some pretty basic template tricks with a child theme.  See some hints from other posts that make it sound possible a theme change might have unexpected consequences.

Any suggestions as to 1) does the incorrect redirect theory hold water  2) where might I find the mechanism that makes association between page id and page name?

One thing to mention that I tried was using the page_id url in the PayPal settings but it worked like previously described when page name url.  (“?page_id=8” vs “transactions”).

Thanks.

As of this morning the transaction page is reached by using the ?page_id=8 form of address.  However, the payment is not recognized by the EE system and so after a few seconds there is a redirection back to PayPal to try payment again.

Close it.  Too late.  Moving on to production set up now.
