Paypal Express "11607; Duplicate Request"

We have a situation where an attendee has successfully paid for a ticket via Paypal express and has been sent an EE Payment Received email, but the registration is marked as payment pending. Looking at the transaction it shows the gateway response as “11607; Duplicate Request”. I assume that she somehow managed to submit the payment twice, and the second ‘duplicate failed’ response from Paypal has overwritten the original successful payment and turned the status to payment pending? Is there a way to prevent this? We’re on 4.9.37.p or EE.

So within the transaction is there 2 payments or just one?

Actually, I’d like to take a quick look at the payment logs on your site so I can see if I can narrow down what happened some more, would that be ok?

Please include details of the registration/transaction so I know where I am looking.

I have this exact same problem today as well. Payment was made successfully to PayPal, but EE shows “11607; Duplicate Request” and has marked the transaction as “Incomplete” and the amount paid to 0.

Hmm, ok.

So, on @colins site there are 2 calls to confirm the payment happening at exactly the same time. The first works, the second returns the duplicate request error and overrides the first as suspected.

@kellerdigital can you provide login details using the same form, I’d like to confirm if the same is happening there.

So far I’ve not been able to reproduce this but will continue to investigate and update this thread with any findings.

Unfortunately, I can’t find anything in the logs to shows the cause for this.

There were 2 requests for payment at the same time, but that doesn’t give any indication of why those 2 requests were made. I’ve reviewed the PayPal Express payment method code and tested on multiple different test sites to try and reproduce the problem but all my tests work as expected.

Without something further to narrow this down I can’t find any reason for the requests to happen but I have created a ticket to keep track of any reports of this so we can investigate further and look for any patterns so if this does come up again, please do let me know so we can check the logs and review.

Thanks for looking into this. I imagine that this may have been user error, and the person registering may have clicked the button twice. If this happens again I’ll make a post.

Possibly although I tried the ‘Mash the buttons’ approach during testing and still couldn’t reproduce so I’m guessing there is some external factor to this but really need more info to be able to narrow it down.

Hi Tony,

Just to let you know that I did a quick trawl through the transaction table in the database and have just found another more recent ‘duplicate request’ error (with the registration incorrectly showing payment pending), and also a couple of ones going back a few months!

I appreciate that it’s hard to narrow down, but I would suggest that if the gateway returns a duplicate request then the insert function should check to make sure that the registration hasn’t already been approved, before changing the status!
