Mailchimp plugin: Replacing subscribed groups instead of adding

Hello!

We use EE4 with the Mailchimp plugin. It appears that when an event is associated with a Mailchimp signup, users are getting unsubscribed from groups they were originally registered to when they create their event.

We’re a church, and in our Mailchimp set-up, we have one list for church membership/affiliates. Under that list, we create different groups. Our set-up is something like this:

Send me information about…
Congregational news
Youth ministry activities
etc.

Event mailing lists…
Event 1
Event 2
etc.

Event 1 in EE4 would point to the Event 1 group, etc. What we’re seeing is that when someone goes to register for Event 1, they are indeed subscribed to the Event 1 group — but they are removed from Congregational news & information, youth ministry activities, etc. In other words, all their original group associations are gone.

I think this might be a bug in how the new EE4 Mailchimp plugin operates. Can you have a look?

Thanks,
-Greg

Hi Grey,

I’m sorry but I’m not sure I follow how you have MailChimp set up, can you provide some further details so we can investigate this please?

Do you have a single ‘list’ within MailChimp, then multiple groups within that list?

You attendees are already subscribed to the list, but when they register onto the event, EE4 is removing all other groups and adding them only to the group from the event?

Tony,

Your summary was correct — a single ‘list’ and multiple groups within the list. If helpful, I can send you a screen shot of our Mailchimp set-up — let me know what address I should send it to.

Your description of what is occurring was also spot on. I might be subscribed to the list, with groups of “Congregational news,” “Youth ministry activities,” and 2 other groups. If I then register for Event 1 and pull up my record in Mailchimp, I am still subscribed to the list, but only to the “Event 1” group and not to the 4 original groups I had.

Hi Greg,

I did some investigating into this and it turns out it is actually a MailChimp API default. For some reason MailChimp replace your interest_groups with whatever groups you pass when you update a subscriber.

We will be including a fix for this so that new groups are added, leaving the originals as they are, in the next version of the MailChimp Add-on.

I’m glad you were able to track it down. We’re looking forward to the update.

Thanks!
