Mailchimp not linking to Event Espresso Registration logs

Hi there,

I’m having a problem regarding linking my Mailchimp to Event Espresso. It shows that my API key is active with a green check mark. But when I view the log for registrants, it gives two messages: 1. code 403, message forbidden, User role ‘viewer’ cannot access this request or 2. This registration could not be subscribed to a MailChimp List with ID: 7eb6083d95. There were errors regarding the following: . Any mandatory or multi-choice fields that are in this MailChimp list require to be paired with Event questions that correspond by type and possibly by having the same answer values.

Also when I go to create an event, I go to the right bar for selecting a Mailchimp list and select a list the message: “No groups found for this List. Sorry, no merge fields found!” appears.

Please assist me with the problem.

Hi there,

Based on this message:

1. code 403, message forbidden, User role ‘viewer’ cannot access this request

It sounds like the user account you created the API key on is set as a ‘Viewer’ which basically means they only have read access to specific locations within the MailChimp account and those same restrictions apply on the API.

Looking here: https://mailchimp.com/help/manage-user-levels-in-your-account/

The account linked to the API key needs to be at least a ‘Manager’ to add contacts/subscriptions.

Also when I go to create an event, I go to the right bar for selecting a Mailchimp list and select a list the message: “No groups found for this List. Sorry, no merge fields found!” appears.

Again this is likely related to the user account level as a Viewer has access to reports and not lists/audiences/groups etc.

Are you the admin of the MailChimp account?

Hi, I’m a manager on the Mailchimp account. The messages that I mentioned before, appear on event espresso not on my mailchimp account. I’m not sure if it is something I need to do on event espresso to link mailchimp to it correctly?

Yeah, I know they appear on your site, that’s expected as EE is displaying whatever error is returned from MailChimp when EE sends a request to them.

EE is requesting details from MailChimp using your API key and MailChimp refuse stating “code 403, message forbidden, User role ‘viewer’ cannot access this request”, EE then displays this on your site as it’s an error you need to see.

I’m not sure if it is something I need to do on event espresso to link mailchimp to it correctly?

The only setup required within EE is adding the API key, as long as that API key has the required access you don’t need to do anything else.

Is the key in use an old key or have you only just created it?

Is there a higher access than Manager on Mailchimp that I need to access information? also yes I think the code is old, what do you suggest I do?

Sounds like that key wasn’t generated with Manager access rights.

Go to your MailChimp account and generate a new key. To do that go to your username in the top right, and ‘Profile’, then Extras and API Keys.

Click create new key and copy the newly created key.

Add that on your site in Event Espresso -> MailChimp.

Now open your event editor, do you see lists/groups listed now?

Okay I have now done this and I think it is working correctly now, I now have a problem where the Mailing List Opt-In email goes to a registrants junk email and the messaging on it old. I’m trying to edit it but not sure where to find it? It is not listed under messages for event espresso

The opt in email isn’t sent by Event Espresso, it’s sent from MailChimp so will use the settings from your Mailchinp account:
