we’ve been using a .gif in our featured image – it works GREAT in the event itself, announcement emails and in Linkedin posts. However, it does not work at all in the upcoming events box on the home page – we just get the .gif’s initial frame – so basically nothing. You can check it out at http://wdma.org thanks!

Hi there,

It seems to be an issue with the GIF itself. Possibly because WordPress is resizing the image. For example, here’s a link to the GIF which seems to have been resized by WordPress to fit the widget area:

So you’re suggesting we make the .gif smaller so that WP doesn’t have to resize it? We were using that size because Linkedin seems to digest it well.

Pretty much, yes.

This is an issue with WordPress core itself and has been around for a long time, see:

https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/28474

Another option is to force the widget to load the full-size image and set the size via CSS. You should be able to do that via the widget settings:

Dashboard -> Appearance -> Widgets -> Upcoming Events Widget -> Image size.

Set that to the largest size you have available there, does it work correctly then?

Note that this also means that any other images you use will load the largest size available.
