Fatal Error: Out of memory (have 190MB to use, so I don't think it's the host!)

Hi all, I’m having the issue with the “Fatal error” memory messages, and they seem to vary a bit every time, but this is how one would look:

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 41943040) (tried to allocate 122880 bytes) in /home/dategreat/rgsl.ca/wp-admin/includes/menu.php on line 126

I checked with my host and he moved me from an unknown amount of memory up to 190MB, but the errors persist unless I disable the plugins associated with Event Espresso.

Could it be some other sort of cause? What should I do to try to find out?

Unless I get to the bottom of this, Event Espresso is a $190 brick. 🙁

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Peter,

Who is your host? If you have 190mb allocated to your site you should not be exceeding any memory limit. And that error message is saying it is maxing out at around 42mb.

Can you go to the System Status menu in the Event Espresso menu and at the top of that page click Generate Report and copy and paste the finding here please?

Please note that even if the WP Memory Limit is set to 190mb, it does not necessarily mean you have that amount of physical memory, the server can hard limit it even if the php.ini/wp-config.php ask for more.

Hi Dean, my buddy is a reseller through DreamHost. I am quite certain I’m being allocated my 190MB, and have checked the .htaccess as well as set a higher limit in the wordpress memory limit command.

Here is the report:

I should also note that I installed a plugin to tell me how much memory was available on the dash, and it reads anywhere in the 30-40mb range, but does also indicate that it’s reading up to 190mb available to it. I noticed in the report that it’s still saying 40mb.

Hi,

Yeah I thought so. I have a reseller account too (Hostgator) and I cannot modify the memory limit, I get what I get. You can up it in the php.ini or wp-config.php but unless Hostgator up the hard limit you are maxed out at what they say.

The status report will show the memory limit set in the wp-config.php.

If you havent tried the wp-config.php route, try it, otherwise your buddy will need to check with the host to find out the actual memory limit given to the reseller accounts is and if it can be upped at all.

Hi there, after talking to the host who confirmed I do indeed have up to 190MB to use even on this reseller account, I played around with the settings and noticed that when I set the limit to 128MB, I got a message under system status that no longer said the limit was 40MB, but “12B”.

Server Software Apache
WP Max Upload Size 128MB

Here is a second system generated log:

I can confirm the wp-settings is set correctly, there’s no weird syntax going on there.

Hi Peter,

96MB is more than sufficient to run Event Espresso and your other plugins. I can advise changing the WP_MEMORY_LIMIT definition to:

define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’96M’);

Hi there, I changed that code over, and it still says:
WP Memory Limit 12B - We recommend setting memory to at least 64MB. See: Increasing memory allocated to PHP
under Event Espresso – System Status.

WP Memory Limit 12B?

What did you add to the wp-config.php file please?
