Expired Events + Google Webmaster Tools

We are running EE4. Our problem is when events expire Google Webmaster Tools picks up the expired events and reports 404 errors. This has an adverse effect on our website ranking with Google, Bing and Yahoo. We do not want to delete the evens because it shows historical information. How can we prohibit Google from getting 404 errors for each expired event?

Hi Tammy, a 404 error is a broken link.

Are your expired events being unpublished?

For example, are you able to reach that expired event in a different web browser than the one that you are currently using?

The events show a status of “published”. The active status of the event are “Expired”. I am able to open another browser and reach any expired event. Example of an expired event: https://singlestwist.com/events/dreamtrips/

We just submitted another sitemap to Google and we no longer see the error. We are to sure what happened however we will monitor these expired events closely.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Tammy,

Please do keep us informed if this issue happens again, but from a general perspective, expired events are never removed by the plugin so they should still be accessible to Google et al.
