Can EE be used in a similar fashion to how phpMyDirectory works? E.g. as an event listings site rather than a mechanism to sell tickets. I would be selling listings for events that have start/end dates and offering the chance to upgrade the listing to featured + images/documents.

Hi, I’m not familiar with that platform. However, it looks like a business directory or an event marketplace.

Event Espresso does not work well as an event marketplace as it can’t send distribute funds to multiple merchant accounts.

The feeling I get with EE is that its more like a booking application – somewhere visitors can buy tickets to specific events. I am more after a listings directory, but rether than just listing businesses, it lists events, with all the attributes that go along with events, start time/end time, reccurance etc.

You can use EE to do the listings, by turning off the ticket selector in EE4, or not displaying the registration page, in EE3. However, like Lorenzo pointed out, it’s not going to have some of the specialized functionality involved in setting up a marketplace like that. For that you may need to get some custom coding done.
