Event Espresso App 4 crashes on launch

Hello,

I have a problem with a mobile app. I use a mobile phone with Android 8.0.0. When I installed the app and run it for the first time it was OK, but each second launch makes the app to crash – the main screen is displayed (with no log in fields, just the wallpaper image) and then it closes. When I clear the cache of the app it doesn’t help. What I need to do is to clear the app data and run it again with entering the login and password again. However, it still runs only for that one session. When I close the app and open it again, it again crashed.
Could you please help to find the solution?

Update: I checked the app on another mobile phone with Android 5.1.1. – it reports “Connection error. Unable to load data”.
I am worried about that as we are going to have 5-6 people with their own mobile phones who will be scanning the tickets simultaneously and I can hardly imagine the process with such app problems.

Hi there,

The apps use the WP Rest API to communicate with your site, looking at your site it looks like the REST API has been disabled?

Could you please tell me where to switch it on?

OK. I addes WP Rest API plugin and enabled all espresso API’s

But it did not help. Once I close the app I cannot launch it again (for details see my first comment)

Actually, my mistake.

It’s enabled, but you are using ‘default’ permalinks rather than ‘pretty’.

The app sends a ‘HEAD’ request to determine if your site is HTTP or HTTPS and your server responds with nothing when it does this, hence the failure. You’ll need to contact your host and ask why their server sends no response to requests like this:

HEAD / HTTP/1.1
Host: www.rozkodujmyafazje.pl
accept-encoding: gzip
connection: Keep-Alive
host: www.rozkodujmyafazje.pl
user-agent: EventEspresso/2.29
cache-control: no-cache

What exactly did you install?

The WP REST API is built into WordPress now, there should be no need for an additional plugin.

I installed the WP REST API Controller (https://pl.wordpress.org/plugins/wp-rest-api-controller) and enabled all under espresso_events in that plugin.

But Event Espresso App4 crashes not even trying to connect to the server. I just open it and it shows only the picture (no logging details) and it closes. On the other phone with Android 5.1.1. I got a crash report (no details only sent to google option)

But Event Espresso App4 crashes not even trying to connect to the server. I just open it and it shows only the picture (no logging details) and it closes.

I did some checking on this and managed to reproduce when I logged into one of my tests sites. I did some digging but could not find a cause so cleared the data for the app again, logged into another site to confirm and had no issue, now logging back into the original site again gives me no issues.

If you clear the app data, restart the device, then log into the app and close it again, then re-open it, do you still get the same issue?

Dear Tony,

I managed to reproduce what exactly makes the app to crash on each android device I have at hand. Here is the exact step by step:

1. Install and open the app – OK
2. Log in to the app – OK (app works perfectly fine)
3. I press e.g. android square multitask button or circle home button to close the app – OK
4. Open the app again – OK (still works fine)
5. Again I do step 3
6. I press android square multitask button and see EE4 app among other last run applications and I swipe it off the screen to clean the memory.
7. Open the app again – the error occurs and the app doesn’t open again.

What I need to do when the error happens is to go to installed application manager and clean the app data (clean only cache doesn’t help). When the app data is clear I can again run the app and log in.
What I also noticed is that the error doesn’t occour when I first log out from the app, ie.:

1. Open the EE4 app -OK
2. Log out – OK
3. I press android square multitask button and see EE4 app among other last run applications and I swipe it off the screen to clean the memory.
4. Open the app again -OK

I guess something is wrong when the application stays in the android memory in multitask mode and then it is closed and the list of active application in the memory is refreshed. Some kind of data remains cached and prevents the app from the next lunch – this is just my guess. Hope it helps to reproduce the problem.

Thank you for the steps you are taking to reproduce, however, I don’t get the same outcome.

Even with force closing the app and reopening it the app continues to work.

I’m using a Samsung Galaxy S8 running v9, after the initial crash and clearing data I reproduced the error once, cleared the data again, logged into another site and all has been well since then even with the above steps.

I’ll create a ticket to see if our developers can reproduce as unfortunately, right now, I can not.

Hello Tony,

did you manage to reproduce the issue? If it helps, I can record a video if you want. I run the app on two Huawei P10 Lite and on one Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime. For the three phone, each one gets an error.

Thank you for the video.

However, unfortunately, the steps you are doing are exactly the same as what I’m doing with no crash so it’s likely going to be difficult to track this down.
