Is it possible to setup an event and accept a deposit prior to full payment?

The software wasn’t written to have this capability, so it’s not currently possible. There is one payment gateway that offers partial payments, and we’ve looked into developing a feature in Event Espresso to integrate this. Right now we do not have the development resources to tackle adding it though.

Any workarounds that you are aware of? Or advice on how to proceed if I would like to implement it on my own?

You could use EE to handle the deposits, and collect the balance manually.

Set the deposit as the price to make a reservation. Then collect the balance by means of sending an invoice or paying at the door.
