WordPress version 3.9.1 with Twenty Twelve theme On June 10 I submitted the topic “[ESPRESSO_EVENTS] is not showing registration page” Tony Warwick diagnosed that Firefox had cached the page when the short code was not parsed for some unknown reason. He suggested increasing the WP_memory_limit to 96M – which I did. Yesterday this problem happened again to one of our clients using Chrome. They were accessing https://creativelifecenter.org/event-registration/?ee=99 I need to get to the bottom of the short code not being parsed problem and get it fixed. Ideas? There are no warnings in the Event Espresso System Status page on our website. Here is the server environment information: Thank you! |
Hi Marcia, I checked the registration page you linked to and it looks like everything is working right now. Can you check the PHP error logs for your site for error entries when the shortcode didn’t parse? This will help narrow down the cause of the issue. |

How do I check the logs? I don’t know where to look for them. The link didn’t work for one of our clients yesterday and then the page was cached with bad contents in her Chrome browser. She can see the page correctly on other browsers but not on the one where it was cached badly. I’m working to help her clear the cache on that browser – but I need to fix this so that other people don’t run into this. |
Hi Marcia, You might find this plugin useful if you can’t find the logs via your host’s control panel or by logging into your site with an FTP client: |

Hi Josh, I logged onto our control panel on hostgator and found the error log. Described as “This function will display the last 300 errors for your site. This can be very useful for finding broken links or problems with missing files.” Is this the PHP error log? There are no errors in it at all. I also got myself into the same problem situation – seeing the [ESPRESSO_EVENTS] rather than the registration page in my Safari browser. What I did a user of the website couldn’t do. I directly viewed the page with the short code while logged into wordpress. Now I can’t open any event registration pages – I only see the short code. I cleared all history and cache for Safari and still have the problem. In another browser (chrome) the pages open fine. Why didn’t clearing the browser cache fix the situation for me? I need to be able to help people get their computers fixed if they hit this problem before we can fix it. How can we find out what is happening to cause the situation for someone not logged into wordpress? (Like our client who hit the situation on Tuesday with Chrome and last I heard had also not been able to see event registration pages.) I really need to make some progress on this today. How can I do that? Thank you – Marcia |
Hi, I viewed your link in Chrome and Safari and its working for me: http://cl.ly/image/1E3f0N061g03 Were you recently using any caching services on your site? — |
Hi Lorenzo, Yes, the links work fine most of the time. Even though I am seeing the problem on one browser on one of my computers. It works find on other browsers on the same computer and on the same type of browser on other computers. The same goes for our client! Trying to get this fixed is getting very frustrating and not going anywhere. There are two problems. #1 Whatever caused this bad parsing in the first place. #2 How to recover once a person gets in this situation. How can I get this addressed more responsively? I do not have any caching plugins installed on my site. Other than Event Espresson Plugins, I am using All in One SEO Pack, Analytics 360, Backup Buddy, Enhanced Admin Bar with Codex search, Google Analytics for WordPress, Google Custom Search, Jetpack by WordPress.com, Landing Pages, MailChimp, MailChimp for WordPress Lite, PopupAlly, and SSL Insecure Content Fixer. I do not see caching in any of them. How do we find out what caused the short code not to be parsed? How can someone recover once that happens? Simply clearing the browser history and cache is not working to recover! Marcia |
This issue appears to be sporadic which is making troubleshooting difficult. I can see some customized templates in use. Could you temporarily deactivate those for a few hours to see if that helps? They are located here: wp-content/uploads/espresso/templates Renaming that folder to templates1 will disable them but this will also change the styling and cause Event Espresso to use its default templates. — |
Hi Lorenzo, What do I look for to see if turning off the customized templates helps? Is it supposed to fix the specific browser that is showing the unparsed short code? If that is what you think might happen, I will try it. If you are wondering if the customized templates are what is causing the short code to not be parsed, how would we test that. I had this problem first happen June 10 (see my first post). The next time that I know it happened was to a client on July 23. Just turning off the temporary templates and waiting for over a month to see if someone hits this parsing problem and lets me know isn’t a good option. (This is a company website in use.) I’ll wait for your answer to know what to test before turning off the templates. Can we call or chat to speed up this interaction? Did you notice in one of my earlier posts, that one way to create the bad view of the page is to be logged into a WordPress website. (This is not the only way as our client was not logged in.) Open the page that has the [ESPRESSO_EVENTS] short code for edit and then click to view the page. Then try to open a registration page on that website. If you have a test website you could see what happens and figure out how to fix up the browser? Thanks – Marcia |
I don’t think it’s a customized template causing the breakage as the shortcode would not parse at all. Are there any redirection plugins running on this site? |
Hi Josh, I don’t have any plugins that I know are doing redirection. Thanks Marcia |
Hi Marcia, Do you have any redirects or constants set up for https/SSL? The reason I ask is because you mentioned that you could reproduce the shortcode parsing issue by going from the page editor to viewing the page with the [EE] shortcode on it. When you are logged into the WP admin, is it redirecting to https: or does it stay on http? Along with that, do you see the shortcode parse when you visit each of these links? http://creativelifecenter.org/event-registration/?ee=99 and https://creativelifecenter.org/event-registration/?ee=99 (Please note one is https, the other one is http) |
Hi Josh, I don’t think I have redirects or constants set up for https/SSL but I don’t now exactly what that would look like? Where would I look and what would I look for? I am using the SSL Insecure Content Fixer – maybe that would do something like that? I also don’t know how to tell if (when I am logged into the WP admin) if it is redirecting to https. If I log in and click “visit site” It does go to https://creativelifecenter.org/ Is that what you are asking? When I visit the two different links in the browser that is showing the bad page contents, it shows both links with the unparsed short code. Thank you – Marcia |
Hi Marcia, It sounds like there are redirects set up, or the WP site URL isn’t configured properly in WP Settings General. Can you check what’s entered there for the Site URL and the WordPress URL? Along with that, can you try checking the main EE registration page with the SSL Insecure content fixer plugin deactivated? |
Hi Josh, In WP Setting General both the Site Address and the WordPress Address are set to be https://creativelifecenter.org Should either of those be using http instead? I deactivated the SSL Insecure content fixer plugin. Using Chrome on a machine that has been opening pages correctly – I logged into my site as admin and opened the main EE registration page for edit and clicked on the View Page button. The short code was parsed! That seems to have fixed the problem that I had been able to recreate. The client that ran into this was not logged into our site. She was just accessing a registration page. Could the SSL plugin cause problems for someone not logged in also? Do I need to not use the SSL plugin or is there way to fix whatever problem it is causing? I’m not sure what the situation is. I went back to the safari browser in my mac that has been stuck on showing the unparsed short code. Unfortunately it still does. I cleared the safari history and caches – still see the bad page contents. Why can’t I get that page to view ok? Thank you – Marcia |
Hi, could you try a force refresh in Safari: http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#force-refresh Here is a screenshot of your site in the current version of Safari: http://cl.ly/image/3s2o0m1u201b Here is another one using a website screenshot service: http://cl.ly/image/0f1t173D0z0i — |

Hi Lorenzo, This morning I cleared the cache and history and then tried the force refresh. Unfortunately, the page contents still appear as: Event Registration Return to Events If you are seeing this page with “ESPRESSO_EVENTS” in brackets and not seeing information for an event, a problem has occurred. Our apologizes! This is rare and being fixed. It would be very helpful to know that the problem has shown up for you. Please send at email to: info at CreativeLifeCenter dot org If I change Safari to “Private Browsing” the short code is parsed correctly and I see the registration page. I turned Private Browsing off and then the page reverted to the unparsed short code. Thanks for the suggestion – I was really hoping it would take care of this strange situation. Marcia |
Hi Marcia, It may help if you can change both the WP and Site address settings to http://creativelifecenter.org instead of https://. Please note, when you save the change it will likely log you out of the site, that’s expected and you’ll be able to log in again. |
Hi Josh, I changed both of those address settings. I’m not sure what part of this that was to help? My safari browser that has been stuck showing the bad page contents (non parsed short code) is still showing the bad page contents. Are you thinking that I might be able to reactive the SSL Insecure content fixer plugin with those addresses changed? Thanks – Marcia |
Hi Marcia, The change from https to http was to help resolve any potential issues with redirects to https that may be causing the main registration shortcode to not parse correctly. I’m not aware of the reason why the SSL insecure content fixer was added to your website, so I’m afraid I don’t have the answer to your question. |
Hi, Do you have another computer that you can check this on or another web browser? I understand that it is happening for you in Safari but we are having trouble duplicating it and our team is located in different countries. It also works on my iPad as well which runs Safari. — |
Hi Lorenzo and Josh, I have checked it on other browsers on this computer and other other computers. They are showing the page correctly and have been. I had this problem happen in June and then it happened to a client (not logged into the site) last week. She was using Chrome. Unfortunately I don’t know how to reproduce whatever happened for her. I can reproduce it when being logged in and looking at the page with the short code on it when the SSL insecure content fixer plugin is active. What I have changed so far with this thread – deactivated the SSL insecure content fixer plugin and updated both the WP and Site address settings to http://creativelifecenter.org instead of https://. It would be good if there was a way to know if those changes will avoid anyone seeing this behavior in the future. But I’m guessing that without a way to reproduce it, you can’t know. What I do still need is a way to get a Safari browser “reset” to parse the short code correctly. If someone happens to hit this again, I need to be able to help them get out of it. My Safari browser is still stubbornly not parsing the short code. Thank you – Marcia |
Hi Marcia, Here’s a link to a guide that shows how to clear Safari’s cache: http://guides.instructure.com/m/4214/l/60429-how-do-i-clear-my-safari-browser-cache Hope that helps! |
Hi Josh, Unfortunately I have already done that multiple times and cleared the history and tried Lorenzo’s suggestion to force refresh. None of those things help. If I change to private browsing the short code is parsed but once I turn off private browsing it is not parsed again. Marcia |
Hi, Could you go to Safari and then in the top left toolbar, click on Safari and about Safari. What is the version number: http://cl.ly/image/0P2y451M2U0K Also, do you have any extensions running for Safari? — |
Good Morning Lorenzo, The same Safari version as in your picture – 7.0.5 (9537.77.4) I have two extensions running WiseStamp (dynamic email signatures) and Buffer (social media sharing). Marcia |
