Error on Admin Registrations: An Event ID was Not Provided (EE4)

Hi there,
We recently switched to EE4 and were having problems sending through registration form data from the admin and front-end pages (see topic:https://eventespresso.com/topic/registrations-failing-when-click-finalize-registration-ee4/).

Since then we’ve had a lot of back-and-forth with our web host’s tech support who have finally confirmed we have no server caching on our website, and the issue was a MOD security rule that they’ve since fixed.
However we are still frequently getting the error “An event id was not provided or was not received” when trying to sign up students in our studio through the admin page, and still occasionally get the “Your form data could not be applied to any valid registrations” error on the front-end.

Since this does not appear to be a caching issue (no server caching, no caching plugin, no-cache rule in .htaccess) what can we do to stop this error on the admin page? About half our registrations are through admin and we typically only have 6-8 tickets per class, so we need to ensure the ticket is spoken for (through a successful registration) before taking payment.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Jackie, this error does not look familiar:

An event id was not provided or was not received

Have you tried temporarily testing with only Event Espresso 4 running to rule out a conflict with another plugin?

I had in the past but I did just try it again to make sure; I disabled all plugins except for EE4, the EE4 Calendar and Stripe Add-On, and the HTTPS Redirection plugin (since we use SSL) and get the same results. Here is a link to a screenshot of what we see: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j7exwpxkrxg4yxn/Screenshot%20%282%29.png?dl=0

Hi, it looks like there are some other plugins running at the time of your screenshot.

Also, could you try another web browser?

http://browsehappy.com

I haven’t seen this issue before so I’m wondering if its either a local browser extension or another plugin that is interfering.

I just tried it on a clean install of IE 11 and got the same result on the first try. Note it doesn’t happen consistently, if we re-enter the information multiple times maybe 1 out of 3 or 4 times it goes through.
Here’s a screenshot of IE: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wj7esd2vgfdha9e/Screenshot%20%284%29.png?dl=0
It is happening on multiple computers.
Thanks

Hi, there are other plugins running in your second screenshot. One of them that caught my eye was WP Security.

Did you test in Internet Explorer with only Event Espresso running?

Also, if you haven’t already done so, could you backup your WordPress site and update to the latest release of Event Espresso 4.

Ok I disabled all plugins, including the calendar and stripe add-on, I updated to the latest version of EE4, and I used a clean install of IE11 and still got the message on the first try.

The front-end is doing a something which may be related where when people refresh the registration page (without completing a registration) then try to register in the same class, they get kicked out with a “An error has occurred: Your form data could not be applied to any valid registrations”. If it’s not related I’m not too concerned about it, most people won’t be refreshing the registration page and if they do they can always contact us to finish their registration (as long as we can fix the admin page problem).

Thanks for giving that a try. Could you let us know who you web host is?

Also, do you have another site on this host on that you can test to see if that message appears?

Our web host is HostPapa. We had previously thought they were using server-level caching on our site but they have assured us that’s not the case, referring to our php.ini file. I do have another site on the same host that I could test with, should I try with the free version of EE4?
Thanks for all the help!

Update: I just installed EE4 Decaf on a different site that is on the same host, no plugins running, on clean IE 11, got the same error the first try.

Hi Jackie,

I remember a conversation with a team member about HostPapa last week so I ran some searches and in this support post, you mentioned that they do have caching enabled:

https://eventespresso.com/topic/registrations-failing-when-click-finalize-registration-ee4/#post-150928

However, in this support post, you mentioned that there is no caching. Could you clarify?

The reason that I ask is that caching could cause sporadic issues such as the one that you are seeing.

Hi there, I linked to that post at the top of this post, as like I said we were originally told by low-level support that there was server-level caching and there was no way to disable it. However once we escalated the issue and finally got technical-level support (which took a few days of back-and-forth), they assured us there was no server level caching and referred us to our php.ini file (redacted). They said instead it was some Mod Security Rules causing the problem which they disabled. So as far as I know at this point, there is no caching in place.

Any ideas? We are currently unable to register people from our admin as it is failing 98% of the time; this poses something of a problem since at least a quarter of our registrations are in person, and we can’t just take payment and keep trying after they leave as the class sizes are so small they may be filled by the time we can actually register them.

Please let us know if you are working on this as we haven’t received a response in over 3 days. Some students don’t want to register online and we are unable to register them. We need this to be fixed right away if it is an EE problem. If not, we need to know what to do to fix it. Thanks for your help.

Hi Jackie, I searched our support forums and could not find any other reports of this specific error. I think this may be an issue with the hosting environment.

Would the developers know what causes the error so I can at least point our host in a direction? Kind of hard to get them to give us tech support for a product we didn’t buy from them without some idea of why it isn’t working.

Here’s the full error text in case that helps them:

An error has occurred:
An event id was not provided or was not received.
Please click the back button on your browser and try again.

Hi Jackie, I asked a developer about this and he believes that the server is stripping out some information during the request.

Could you ask your host to take another look at the changes that were done for mod security?

Thanks for looking into that for us. We’ve since done a ton of testing and back-and-forth with our host, and have finally discovered that it appears to be our internet connection at the studio that is causing the error. We found our IP address is constantly changing and that appears to be affecting the registration data from being sent, though why we weren’t affected with EE3 (same wifi) we don’t know. In any case I will mark this as resolved as we will be changing ISPs son and hope that resolves the issue for good.

Thanks!
