Emails to admin not being sent

Hi there,

We’ve recently taken over management of one of our customers websites who use Event Espresso. They used to receive a confirmation email to say that someone had registered for an event. Emails to the customer are working fine, however.

Primary contact email in settings is correct and so is the one listed under the WordPress Admin user.

We have updated WordPress and Event Espresso to the latest versions but to no avail:
– EE Version 3.1.32.2.P
– WP Version 3.5.1

Can you advise whether there is a flag somewhere that we cannot find to turn this feature on/off or somewhere else we can look?

They’re on shared hosting, and we do not have access to the vhosts log files or mail server log files to see whether the email is being pushed into the queue.

We have checked SPAM folders also.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

Hi Matt,

If one set of emails is working then it is either a setting issue or a server issue.

I would start by double checking the Event Espresso General Settings to make sure that the default email is correct (you said it was, but just in case). I would also check the individual events to make sure there is no email in the Alternate Email Address (optional) setting as unless this also contains the admin email (comma separated emails are fine) then it will over ride the admin email and not send anything there.

If the emails and settings are looking ok, then I would suspect its a server issue.

You could try the WP SMTP Mail plugin as some users find this helps with emails being sent.

If that doesnt succeed you could try using a service such as Mailchimp’s Mandrill or the PostMarkapp.

Thanks Dean,

I’ve checked those fields and all seem to be correct. I inputted another email address I have access to on a different domain into the alternate field and did some testing and no emails through to that either. I suspect it may be an issue with the way this servers PHP mail is configured. Unfortunately we don’t have access to another SMTP server to be able to relay mail for us so I think we might switch the hosting across and see if we can get something happening that way. At least we will be able to have access to logfiles if we swap it over to better diagnose the issue should it still occur.

Thanks for your help today.

Matt

Hi Dean,

We swapped the hosting over tonight and that has made all the difference. Thanks for your time.

Matt

Hi Matt,

One thing that may help is you can use a gmail account with the WP SMTP plugin.

Hi Josh,

We did think of that, however Gmail will always send the message ‘on behalf of’ the sender email when you use your Gmail authentication details. We did not want emails coming out unprofessionally titled with a sender From: ‘example@gmail.com on behalf of events@company.com‘.

With some email clients hitting the reply button, the message can sometimes go through to the Gmail account plus it wouldn’t match our customers branding unfortunately.
