I have read this month’s blog article about the new capabilities system in EE4, the developer.eventespresso.com/docs/ee-capability-system-overview/ article and looked at the spreadsheet.

I can see that it’s powerful, but I can’t see any simple recipes to follow.

Having installed the recommended ‘members’ WP plugin, I can give a WP user role various EE capabilities, but when I log in as that user, no EE menu appears in the Dashboard.

Do you need to have a minimum level of WP user role for that to happen? (I am currently trying it for ‘contributor’.)

Hi Ian,

Yes, we have provided some amazing granularity of control for capabilities but it can be a little overwhelming.

What sort capabilities did you want to give the role? E.g. allow to create new events, allow to edit other peoples events, etc.

Look at / edit / delete people’s registrations and transactions. There’s only one event and it wasn’t created by them.

I’ve installed members plugin and given the WP user the eight ‘registrations’ and four ‘transactions & payments’ capabilities. I should probably add the ‘contact (attendees)’ ones if I want them to be able to email people via EE?

But the only thing in the WP Dashboard for them is their profile.

You do not need a specific role to do this, you can do it with any (or even for specific members)

In order for the Event Espresso menu to load you’ll need a minimum of ee_read_ee and ee_read_events – http://take.ms/ESpKD

So to start with if you add those 2 capabilities can the user account see EE?

Pro tip – Install the User Switching plugin to allow you to switch between your user account and the one you want to test easily OR open up an incognito/private window of your browser and log into the other account there.

That way you can add capabilities in one window, refresh the other and you’ll get instant changes.

Ah ha, thank you!

Yes, I’ve been using two browsers to edit the capabilities and see what happens. Now it works, the real person can be told the details.
