I would like to use EE for a cooking class website. They offer prepaid multi-class discount cards and gift certificates, both of which can be used to pay for classes offered. Is this functionality available/doable with EE?

Hi Carol,
It might be possible using our Groupon/Voucher addon. You can create a list of voucher codes and give a voucher code to the buyers at the time of purchase. Then when they register for a class on the website, they enter the voucher code and can then register without being charged a second time. The code is also automatically marked as used in the system.
Does that sound like it will help?

Yes! So if I understand you correctly, the Groupon addon doesn’t have to be used just for Groupon.
What about selling these discount cards and gift certificates? I’m wondering if there is a way to use EE for that, or if I will need an e-commerce plugin….

Great! The Groupon is just the name we chose when we created it (SEO reasons), but you can use it for most any voucher code system.
You will need an e-commerce plugin, capable of creating or distributing the unique codes, to handle the sales of the discount cards and gift certificates. You will also need to manually add or batch upload the codes. This will need to be figured out based on how you implement the sales of the discount cards and gift certificates. However, it may be possible for a developer that is familiar with the shopping cart system to create a script that auto-populates the voucher database in Event Espresso.
This is actually something that we are interested in adding as well, but have not had the resources to accomplish. So if you are interested we may be able to help cover the costs (provided it is done correctly) or maybe have one of our developers work with you on for a discounted rate.

First – I really appreciate your prompt and detailed response. I’m getting closer to framing a solution for my client. Do you have a recommendation as to which e-commerce plugins play nicely with EE? I was looking at woocommerce as an option – the client also has some actual products to sell.
I am not familiar enough with any shopping cart system to do that kind of development work (correctly) – but it would be a great feature to be able to offer so I will try to work that into the solution/proposal.
