Customise 'available spaces' display

I want to customise what is displayed under ‘available spaces’ in very much the way described in the article at: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/how-to-customize-your-available-spaces-text/

This page says it is due to be updated to take account of changes in version 2.2. As I am on 3.1.33 I wonder if someone could confirm if the instructions stand or if there is anything different to do?

They still apply. The line numbers may be a bit different, but the code still applies.
