Conversions on Google Adwords not matching up

Hi there,

I have Google Adwords set up so that a conversion is when someone lands on our “Thank You” page on Event Espresso after they register for one of our courses. However, in the September month, for example, there were 90 conversions recorded on Adwords, and only 53 actual Approved Registrations on Event Espresso. Some more info:

– I have counted incomplete transactions and Google is still too high
– I set up Adwords properly because I did it while doing a screenshare with Google

Thanks,

Courtney

Hi Courtney,

If you check the Thank you page by browsing to it directly, does the tracking code get loaded onto the page? (you can view the page’s source to verify)
If the tracking code is loaded onto the page without a finalized transaction then any re-visit to the Thank you page could make it so a conversion would be counted twice.

If that’s the case, then you could check into seeing if there’s a way to not track the visit if “revisit=1” is in the URL.

That would make sense, but there are some months where I have 50 Conversions on Google Adwords and 0 complete course registrations, 4 incomplete transactions, and 1 cancelled registration. I double checked with Google Adwords and they say the tag is only on the thank you page, not the registration checkout or any other page.

If you check the Thank you page by browsing to it directly, does the tracking code get loaded onto the page? (you can view the page’s source to verify). Then after you check that page, can you check to see if that visit managed to get counted as a conversion?

The thank you page had the code when browsing directly, but there’s no way to find the thank you page without the direct link. Additionally, when it says on Google Adwords there’s 30 conversions and there were 0 payments that month and the month prior. So there is no way that people buying are coming back to the page because there never was anyone buying.

Bots will hit the Thank you page without a direct link. Also, the Thank You page can be navigated to during the registration process without completing a payment.

The way it’s set up right now is it’s tracking every visit to the page, including a declined charge.

In order to fix this you’re going to need to conditionally load the tracking code. The conversions will not get counted as expected when the tracking code is loading everytime the Thank You page is requested.

Hi Josh,

I see. And what would this entail? Contacting Google Adwords or getting our IT team involved?

If someone on your IT team has a working knowledge of PHP, then they’ll be able to make that happen. Google Adwords reps will not know what to do.

I can recommend reviewing this tutorial:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/add-course-curriculum-events-using-advanced-custom-fields/

While the above tutorial doesn’t show how to add conversion tracking, it shows how to add a “Course Curriculum” to the Thank You page after the transaction is completed. A PHP developer can adapt the code to add conversion tracking in the same way.

Hi Josh,

Now I am seeing that there has in fact been online purchases through event espresso. However, according to EE there are 0 registrations for our TCP class, but there are actually 28 registrations on our PayPal account. Our clients can only pay through PayPal on our website through EE, so why isn’t this showing on EE?

Hi Courtney,

If you edit the event in question and view the links in the top right where you update the event, do you see registrations on the ‘Pending payment’ link?

This section – http://take.ms/mNIau

Or if you go to Event Espresso -> Registrations and search for one of the users that have paid in PayPal, do you see the registration for them there?
