Confirmation of wait list positions

My client is facing an issue with wait list positions on free events.

When an attendee is promoted from a wait list to a registrant they get an email that a slot has opened up. However the status is changed to approved at the same time without the attendee having to click and confirm the approval link on the email.

What would be the way to change this behaviour so that the event arranger would know if the client has actually approved the slot?
