All events and registrations disappeared

For some reason, all my events and event registrations have disappeared. Completely gone! I had a lot of events and registrations and now I can’t find them at all. I went to my Dashboard and it says there is an update for EE4 and my addons but my support license is invalid, but I login to my account and my license is still fine. I entered it in again, then tried to update again, and yet it won’t update and says my license is invalid.

So I downloaded the plugins, deleted them from the dashboard, and reinstalled, but all my events and registrations are still gone. I am in the process of restoring the site from a backup, but I need to know why everything disappeared and how to stop it from happening again.

Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear this happened, I’m afraid we don’t know why this happened or how it could happen. We’re you able to check the database to see if the events were still in the wp_posts table?

I backup the site daily, so restored it form about two days ago when they say there were events and registrations in there. Everything looked good. EE needed updated, but I had to run so I figured i’d come back and finish that later. When I left this morning, the events and registrations were there.

When I got back, the events were still there, but all the registrations were gone. Which is super weird.

I am once again restoring it from backup, but this is a pretty big problem and I don’t know what’s causing it.

Hello,

I’m not sure why this is happening but we’ll work with you to try to pinpoint why this is occurring.

You shared that after the restore, some information is disappearing. Do you have any database optimization plugins running?

Sorry for the delay, this was all going on while I was on vacation so I was trying to get it fixed for the client. Anyway, I use ManageWP to run updates as well as optimize the database, remove spam, etc.

I restored the site from the backup again, then I upgraded the plugins and ran the migration, and it seems like everything stuck this time. I suspect that the upgrade when run through ManageWP may have caused the problem? I don’t know. I’m not sure why it was saying my registration key was invalid because it’s not, but it’s working now.

Hello,

Thanks for letting us know how you resolved the issue.

If you upgraded from 4.8.x or an older version of Event Espresso to the current release, then you would have been prompted to migrate your information to the latest release:

Is there a way to get notified when I need to do a special migration with the upgrade? I manage over 200 sites, so when ManageWP says there are updates available, I run them there – but it only updates the plugin, not anything else that needs done and I think this is where I ran into issues.

Event Espresso 4 doesn’t have a notification message that detects whether your site is ready for a major point update. Does ManageWP tell you which version it’s ready to update to? What happens is EE4 will only run a migration if it’s a major point release. So for example if you’re on 4.8.40.p and the update to 4.9.1.p is ready, you’ll need to run a migration. On the other hand, there’s no migration going from 4.9.1.p to 4.9.2.p. So the next version that will have a migration will start with 4.10.0.p.

When I see there are updates when I’m in ManageWP, there are usually a lot of updates (with 200+ sites) so I don’t pay a lot of attention to which plugins are being updated. It’s normally pretty routine stuff, and it’s so important to stay up to date with all the updates. I know it would be ideal to have a staging version of all these sites, but that’s just not practical, so I do daily backups and run the updates.

I assume that everything got lost when the plugin was updated without doing the migration. Does that seem like a plausible explanation?

No that doesn’t sound right. What happens is when site goes from EE4.8 to 4.9, there’s a prompt that says to go to the Maintenance page to run the migrations. If you do nothing at that point, the registration forms will be inactive, but no data will be deleted.
In order for EE4 to run a script where the data would be deleted, someone would have to go to the Maintenance page and click the button that says “Don’t run the migrations and delete all data” button that’s on the maintenance page, then click the “Yes, I’m sure” that comes next.
