Abandoned / Pending Tickets Issue on EE4?

If I have a ticket that is limited (let’s say 1 ticket available), what really happens when somebody attempts to register online but abandons it? Does the ticket release back right away for others to buy, or does it remain on hold for the person who abandoned the ticket registration? Also, is that a setting that I can change? Ideally, I’d like to be able to have the person have extra time to register (while saving that ticket for them) without having to manually switching them to completed (in order to show that the ticket is sold out) when it really has not yet been completed.

Thank you for your insight in advance!

Hi there,

If I have a ticket that is limited (let’s say 1 ticket available), what really happens when somebody attempts to register online but abandons it? Does the ticket release back right away for others to buy, or does it remain on hold for the person who abandoned the ticket registration?

EE puts the ticket on reserve for the duration of the users session (by default 1 hour), if the user has not completed the registration by then the ticket is released back for sale.

Also, is that a setting that I can change?

You can increase the session duration but that applies to more than just the ticket reservation.

Ideally, I’d like to be able to have the person have extra time to register (while saving that ticket for them) without having to manually switching them to completed (in order to show that the ticket is sold out) when it really has not yet been completed.

Do your users need more than an hour to complete the registration?

Event sponsors will sometimes mull it over, and those limited tickets should be allowed to remain on hold, but I would like to be able to release it manually as well if the event date is nearing.

Ok, so how long are you wanting to allow them to reserve the ticket for?

It sounds like you may be better using a Default Registration Status of Approved which means all ticket sales apply to the ‘sold’ values but you can manually switch the status of the current registration to something else to allow someone else to register.

Well, the goal is to ensure that it is easy to follow the registration / money process too. So, if someone is given approval status instead of pending payment, how will we be able to easily monitor that? I’m thinking 24 hours would likely work, but I am open to ideas and recommendations for these type of scenarios.

The main thing is that we want everybody to use the registration process, but charity events (for example) will pass along the payment processing fee if they pay via credit card on the site. When we are talking about sponsor ticket registrations, that percentage fee usually adds up to 50 or $100. To avoid that, many want to send in a check or pay another way. So, I do not want to finalize the payment until the check arrives, but verbal commitments for the sponsorship while the check is in the mail should be allowed to place a short hold on that ticket type.

Registration and transaction status are separate, they may well update at the same time with certain actions, but they are separate and you can pretty much have any registration status with any transaction status.

So to answer your question, the registration would show as approved but the transaction would show incomplete.

I’m thinking 24 hours would likely work, but I am open to ideas and recommendations for these type of scenarios.

That’s a very long time to keep the session open and may well cause other issues, I can’t think of anything specific off the top of my head but will ask for some feedback from our developers.

Are the sponsor tickets on their own event, or are they mixed in with other tickets on an event?

IMO you would be better using a DRS of Approved as mentioned above, but this would also require your sponsor ticket to be on its own event, as you can’t set the DRS for a specific ticket, it’s for the registrations made on an event. That way when the sponsor selects the ticket, provides their details they can select either an online or offline payment method, their registration will then be Approved and they take the spot.

If they pay by an online payment method, that payment will show in the transaction and the transaction will have a status of complete.

If they chose an offline payment method the registrations shows Approved but the transaction remains incomplete until you apply the payment.

If at any time you wish to revert the status you can manually change it and the ticket goes on sale again.

I think extending the session time for the above is not going to work, what happens when the post is delayed and the session time automatically runs out, the ticket goes on sale and another user registers for that ticket… and pays using an online payment method?
