Using event categories in blog category plugins?

I have a plugin for pulling in latest blog posts that I really like (the format is really nice) – is there a way that Event Espresso categories can be used instead of default blog categories? I’m assuming that events are set up as custom post types, but I’ve never had this issue before with other plugins using custom post types (for portfolios, etc) with standard widgets. The one I’d like to use in this case is the Genesis Featured Post Widget – I’d like to use this to display category-specific upcoming events.

I have to say, I’m disappointed in the lack of plug-and-play widget options with Event Espresso – the only option is the calendar, which doesn’t suit my needs.

Hi Lauren,

Events are indeed custom post types in EE4 (espresso_events) and Event Categories are a custom taxonomy (espresso_event_categories).

I’m not a Genesis user myself, but does the Featured Posts widget not allow you to select one or more post types and/or taxonomies?
