Is it possible to trigger an email when the registration-payment flow in EE4 using the Quickbooks payment gateway is abandoned? Right now, we’re manually setting the Registration status to “Not Approved” and triggering a custom email on that. But we’d prefer to not have to do the manual action.

Not exactly, but what you can do is change the default registration status to “Pending Payment”. This way the registrant will be allowed to pay without you doing the manual action.

That’s a clever idea. Will setting that be a problem on students who complete their registration and pay in a single pass?

No, a default registration status (DRS for short) of ‘Pending Payment’ works how the majority of people expect ‘normal’ purchase to work.

When the user pays the transaction amount in full they are automatically set to be ‘Approved’ as your registration is no longer pending payment (payments is complete). When a user manages to ‘finalize’ a registration without payment (so if they hit the thank you page) they will be set to Pending Payment.

Setting the DRS to Approved overrides that and basically tells Event Espresso “I don’t care about the payment status, set all registrations to Approved and I’ll manage them from there”.
