Hello,
After our EE events and settings were accidentally wiped clean, I rebuilt them. I then attempted a transaction for an event using our PayPal payment gateway, and when clicking submit, I got the message “Transaction refused due to risk model”. As far as I can tell, I have set up our PayPal API info correctly. I appreciate any suggestions I can use to fix the problem. Thanks!

Hi Tia,

When you attempted the transaction was the payment method set to debug mode or was it a live transaction using a real credit card?

Hi Josh,
Thank you! I’m learning as I go, could I run this by you? In general settings –> admin options I changed the “enable full logging” drop-down to “no”, which had been set to “yes”. I left “enable remote logging” selected “no” as well. Is this what you’re referring to?

No that’s a logging feature. If you go to Event Espresso > Payment Methods then your PayPal settings, is the Debug Mode On? option set to Yes or No?

Ok thanks. Debug mode is (and was already) set to Off.

Something maybe worth mentioning – recently I had to change an EE registration shortcode because it was not activating. The live site only showed the shortcode text. Here is the post and reply from EE support staff: https://eventespresso.com/topic/ee4-update-now-showing-only-shortcodes/

Hi there,

“Transaction refused due to risk model” is an error being thrown by the PayPal API and means that either PayPal or the users bank refused the transactions based on whichever risk assessment factors they use.

Generally it is caused by the user entering billing infromation that does not match the details set on the account being used, similar to a ‘Failed AVS Check’ (Address verification service check).

Can you find the Registration this is for within:

Event Espresso -> Registrations.

Open the registration and then click the ‘View Transaction’ button.

You should see the transaction with at least 1 payment within it that shows the ‘Gateway Response’ of ‘Transaction refused due to risk model’, does it also have an error number there?

Thank you, that helps to know. I cannot find an error number nor a gateway response code, neither in the transaction receipt nor the details page. Our paypal account does not have any record of a failed transaction.

Is this PayPal standard, PayPal Pro, or PayPal Payflow Pro that you’re trying to use?

PayPal Pro.

If you’re not seeing the transactions in your PayPal account, then it may be best to contact PayPal support and request some new API keys.

Ok, I will try that. Thank you for your help!
