We have an event this weekend and the barcode reader we have (DataLogic) are not scanning the barcodes on the tickets that have been distributed. We have used these scanners with great success with some other ticket systems. I am just concerned that we will not be able to scan at this large event on Saturday.

I tested the scanner with default settings and then proceeded to us the custom option barcodes in the book that came with the scanner. Unfortunately, none of them seem to be working. Is there a specific setting for these scanners that we need and could you provide direction on this?

Hi there,

Can you tell me your scanners exact model number please?

Are you using only barcodes or QR codes to?

We are scanning barcodes only.

Are we able to use QR codes via mobile. I thought I saw something in the forums saying the mobile QR code scanning was not compatible with EE4. Is that correct?

Can you test scanning 2 different types of barcodes with your scanner please?

Simply go HERE and try scanning either of those barcodes.

You should be able to do this without printing the ticket but if neither scan can you try printing and retest.

Scanning EE4 Tickets with a mobile device is possible and works well. However there is currently not a full app integration that works in the same way as the EE3 app. Scanning on a mobile device is done in the same way you would with a physical barcode scanner, only your using the devices camera. You can find more information here:

Tony,

I really appreciate you getting back to me so quickly.

I tested the barcodes you sent over on screen and printed out. Neither worked. Is there another setting we need to try for the scanners?

I also downloaded the Barcodescanning Keyboard you suggested. It works with the QR code. The only thing is with over 1000 people coming to the events I think the extra step will be cumbersome for our gate entry people, which then will create a long line. We do not want to have that. So if we can figure out the USB scanners, that would be best.

Thanks so much.

Jay

Tony,

I just tried a different scanner we have, 3x Etekcity® 2 pack USB Automatic Scanning Barcode Code Scanner. It did scan the two codes you sent me, but when I went back to test an acctual ticket from our event coming up this weekend, it would not scan. Not sure why this is.

Also I just noticed that the “Lookup Attendee” function is not working. I entered a last name of someone on our list but it says invalid. Any thoughts on that?

Best,

Jay

Tony,

In further review, the Etekcity scanner only scans the second barcode you sent me. The one without the black border. Does that help?

It does yes.

On either of your scanners, do you have an option to enable ‘Inverted’ scans?

I’m assuming these tickets have all already been issued so you can’t change them?

To note, the attendee lookup feature is not to search for attendees in the way you mentioned. You still input a barcode when using that feature and that attendee details will be shown, you can then manually check them in or out. Continuous mode just checks the user in without pulling/displaying the info.

Hey Tony,

Yes the tickets have all been issued.

I am looking through the manual book and I do not see anything about “inverted” scans. And there is nothing on the scanner as such. Would it be called something else? I have a number of barcodes in the manual that can be enabled or disabled.

Ok, So if they do not have their ticket with them, we can not look them up and check them in through the scanning process? We will have to back out to the event check-in tab?

I downloaded your manual and no it does not appear to support inverted scans. The default barcodes within EE4 are blackback grounds with white bars which are inverted barcodes, the QS2500 does support those, you can see what I mean HERE, search for ‘inverted’.

It seems your barcode scanners will not scan those barcodes as they only support ‘black on white’ barcodes.

As it is so close to the event currently I would recommend using the barcode scanner app on the QR codes to scan your tickets. EE can be altered to output ‘black on white’ barcodes but that does not help for ‘this’ event. You could also purchase scanners that support both ‘black on white’ and ‘white on black’ although your current scanners will work, with a slight adjustment to the next barcodes.

Tony,

Thanks for looking that all up. Unfortunate for this event.

How do we change the barcode for future events? Is this something I will do for each event on the back end, or is it something your team does?

Best,

Jay

To alter the barcode you need to go to Event Espresso -> Messages.

Find the ticket message type and click to edit.

You should see something like this – http://take.ms/7HQ1P

Notice the barcode shortcode in use is –

[BARCODE_* w=1 h=70 fsize=18 bgcolor=#0000000 color=#ffffffff]

It sets the bgcolor to #000000 (Black)
And the color of the barcode itself to #ffffff (White).

Simply swap these around:

[BARCODE_* w=1 h=70 fsize=18 bgcolor=#ffffff color=#000000]

Sets the background to white and the barcode to black.

I have created a ticket for EE to use these settings by default, if scanners are unable to scan them I think it would be better to use black on white barcodes by default. This will be included within the next version of the barcode scanner, however will require the ticket template to be reset using this button – http://take.ms/yDx1U (or manually change any barcode shortcodes you have in already to match above)

*Note the reset will only make a difference after the ticketing update has been released

Do you have custom ticket templates or are you using the default ticket?
