Hi, this week I upgraded to version 4.9.61.p for a client’s site. They are using PayPal Standard as their gateway. Since the upgrade, they’ve had several customers have their payment fail. Customers have complained that the site “hangs” while trying to get to PayPal.
The strange part of this is that, if the customer gives it a second try, the payment has been coming through just fine.
In EE’s payment gateway logs, I see this error:
“Could not update transaction based on payment because the payment details have not yet been put on the payment. This normally happens during the IPN or returning from PayPal”
We hadn’t really run into this type of problem until after the upgrade. Do you have any ideas as to what may be happening here?
The PayPal Standard gateway is usable but regarded as obsolete and best avoided due to having been superseded by the PayPal Express gateway. You can use the same PayPal account with PayPal Express, and here’s the guide that outlines how to set up PayPal Express:
We’ve seen other report of this issue with PayPal Standard, and that’s why we recommend avoiding it.
