Using PayPal Standard in EE4 – Should the PayPal transaction in EE change automatically when a refund is completed in my PayPal Dashboard online? Or do I need to complete a Manual Refund TX?

09/04/19 – PayPal refund processed in EE
09/04/19 – “The payment is in progress. Another message will be sent when payment is approved.” message auto-appears on transaction, Invoice & Registration docs in EE
17/04/19 – Notified by PayPal (by email), refund “Your eCheque payment has cleared”
18/04/19 – No notification received in EE – Transaction remains the same as on 17/04/19.
EE will not update the EE transaction automatically when a refund is applied via your payment provider, nor will it automatically apply for a refund through your provider if you apply a refund within EE.
So you will need to manually update the transaction and apply a refund to it through the dashboard after refunding the funds from your provider (in this case PayPal).
I also highly recommend switching from PayPal Standard to PayPal Express, you don’t need a different account type with PayPal but the integration method is different and more reliable than Standard (new users no longer see the option to use PayPal Standard). You’ll need different credentials for your account to link with the payment method but we have documentation on finding those here:
