Hello,

I recently had a customer reach out and say they got this error when trying to check out with a credit card via PayPal Pro:

“PayPal did not accept your API username, password, or signature. Please double’check these credentials and if debug mode is on”

Our debug mode is set to off because this is an active account. I have followed all of these instructions: https://eventespresso.com/wiki/paypal-express-payment-gateway/#guest-checkout

What does this error mean? I thought customers could check out without having a PayPal account of their own. I copied and pasted the PayPal credentials and they were accepted, so I know they are accurate. What could be my issue?

It sounds like you have both the PayPal Express gateway activated *and* the PayPal Pro gateway activated too, where the PayPal Pro gateway has no credentials entered on its settings page. You could deactivate the PayPal Pro gateway, then customers will still be able to pay with credit card using PayPal Express checkout.

If you decide to keep PayPal Pro activated, you’ll need to upgrade your PayPal account to include PayPal Pro (there’s an extra monthly fee) and there will be additional steps to take to be PCI compliant.
