PayPal IPN validation is failing

Hi,
We have event espresso installed with over a year now. We have had issues in the past which were resolved using the slimmed down transaction page template. All worked well after that.
However another issue has now arisen. All PayPal IPN messages are failing. I have done some testing and the transaction is going through on the PayPal side of things and the PayPal system receives a 200 message from our transaction page and so on. But the paypal-ipn log file shows the following message:

Errors resulting from the execution of curl transfer: Problem with the SSL CA cert (path? access rights?)[01/02/2014 4:07 PM] – FAIL: IPN Validation Failed . /cgi-bin/webscr : http://www.sandbox.paypal.com

As a result the transactions in Event Espresso never update to completed with the green check mark.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi,

I would recommend contacting the hosting company support about this.

It’s an issue with how the server is setup. The CA (certificate authority) file on the server is the endpoint for a chain of trust that starts with paypal.com, or whatever site is trying to use https.

It checks paypal’s cert, looks at the issuer, checks the issuer’s cert, checks the issuer’s cert of the issuer’s cert, etc, until it finds an issuer that matches one in the CA file on the server. It could be something as simple as the server is missing the CA file.
