Greetings, I have a user that is getting an error message when using the PayPal Express Checkout with Smart Buttons. Specifically the Credit option. They are returned a message that says “An invalid response was returned from the server while attempting to process your request. Please refresh the page and try again or contact support.” They are provided the PayPal popup from them and complete the entry. When they submit that is when they are getting the error. Looking under Payment Methods and then logs I do not see an entry for me to even begin to troubleshoot. Please let me know how I can troubleshoot this. Thank you! |

After a later attempt #6, this finally worked for the user. Could have been a PayPal issue but still would be nice to know where to see the logs around this on the Event Espresso end so I can see why the error message was presented to the user in the first place. |
Hi there, You won’t find log entries for the above error in Event Espresso itself as that error is thrown when EE received an invalid response to the ajax request used by the payment method, which means EE doesn’t have anything to log. Smart buttons uses an iFrame from PayPal, meaning everything is done on their server and then the ajax request mention above processes the response, if that fails the request can’t do/log anything within EE. If you check your server’s error logs around the time of the payments/error can you any fatal errors there? |

Greetings Tony, The only logs I know of I can see on the FTP site are access.log, error.log, and php.log. The error and PHP logs do not show anything relevant. The access log has lots in it but nothing looks like an error. Is there another log I should be looking at? |
If error.log is where your server is set to log PHP errors then no, that’s the file you need. Without being able to reproduce this or see an error in the logs there isn’t much you can do to troubleshoot this, is it still happening on the site? |

Thank you, Tony. It appeared to be a short term issue for one user. Looks like I will have to assume that it was a PayPal issue since nothing logged on my end. Thank you! |
You’re most welcome. If it does happen again, link me to an event I can test on an I’ll see if I can spot anything there. |
