Hi,

May I ask is the Paypal Express the bundled version (included in the Event Espresso 4 plugin) or is this the separate add-on “PayPal Express Checkout Smart Payment Buttons (with Venmo) v1.0.4.p”.

One place you could check is the site’s PHP error log. There may be a specific error there that was logged at the moment that PayPal Express was activated.

Its the one bundled with Event Espresso 4
How do I find the PHP error log?

Usually you would log into your hosting company account. They’ll have a control panel, where you can access the logs. If you’re unsure where to find it, they can advise where to find the logs, and they may even be able to find the error message for you.

Any other suggestions – my hosting company says I don’t have access to those logs

and they don’t have access either?

If not, then, if you have access to FTP (or the site’s files via the hosting company’s control panel), you could enable debug mode provided by WordPress. To enable WordPress debug mode, you follow this guide:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/troubleshooting-checklist/#debug

Then, you activate PayPal Express (to get the error to happen again). The error should get logged to the site’s wp-content folder into a file named debug.log.

This is the error I am getting:
[11-Sep-2019 17:27:06 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Cannot use object of type WP_Error as array in /var/www/vhosts/16/229527/webspace/httpdocs/mwfa.net/member/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-core-reg/core/services/payment_methods/forms/PayPalSettingsForm.php on line 119

That same error was reported in another topic:

https://eventespresso.com/topic/error-on-save-paypal-express-options/

and it was found to be an issue with the web server. You could contact your host and they should be able to update the server so it can meet PayPal’s requirements. If they need more information that can be found here:
https://developer.paypal.com/docs/classic/lifecycle/info-security-guidelines/
