The icons can be restored by resetting the templates (click the Reset button in the template editor).
If you want to remove the icons, then you can go to Event Espresso > Messages > Default Message Templates > Reciept and edit the html to remove the <img> tags in the code that outputs the icons.
e.g. remove <img class="icon" src="{/path-to-plugin}/core/templates/global_assets/images/calendar_year-24x24.png">
