Hi there,

My other WordPress plugins that use PayPal do not require the API credentials – I just enter the PayPal email address and the user goes off to PayPal to pay, returning to the site after payment at PayPal.

That’s ‘PayPal Standard’ and is rather unreliable.

EE switched to using PayPal Express a little while back (See HERE) as its much more reliable than hoping the PayPal standard IPN hits your site before your user does.

Can I not do that simple solution with EE4?

You can, but I highly recommend against doing so. You can use a ‘normal’ account with PayPal Express and although an SSL certificate is recommended for both PayPal Standard and PayPal Express it isn’t required any more, or less than either of those options.

You can find the API credentials within your PayPal account by following the documentation here:

When your user selects PayPal express they will still be sent to paypal to make a payment, and then returned back to your site, it’s just a different method used with PayPal and requires different details to use it.

If you really want to use PayPal standard we have a filter available to enable it within EE4 again, but again I would highly recommend testing the above first, PayPal standard has been known to cause multiple issues for users waiting for the IPN to be sent from PayPal to your server.
