We use forms in EE to gather data for personalizing projects our clients choose from- so they may pick a project with a checkbox and then be asked to enter their name and established date. The check box data is getting to us, but nothing that is being typed into TEXT boxes is getting to us after registration. We have several websites that use EE and this is happening with them all.

Hi there,

Can you explain what you mean by “is getting to us after registration”? Does that mean if you go into the registration entry in Event Espresso > Registrations the answers fields displayed there are blank?

Also, are your several websites running the current version of Event Espresso 4?

We have 12 websites all running EE4, up to date. When our clients fill out the forms, they check the boxes and enter their text info in the form. The answers to the check boxes show up in our registrations and in our emails but the answers that our clients put into the boxes (text) do NOT show up. They all say they enter their info but we never see it.

And yes, the answer fields are blank, when the clients all say they did fill in their info.

Have you tested the form to see if your answers show up in the registration?

Can you post a link here to an event page of your site so we can investigate further?

Yes, info entered into text boxes doesn’t (for example: family name, established date) show up in the email OR in the registration inside of EE. Here are three examples:

Others:

I did notice that a / affected one of our forms working correctly. The only place where we have that now is in our terms and conditions description in a question inside of a question group. Could one / or * ? affect the entire form from accepting text field data?

Hi there,

All of the links are either private or expired events so we can’t view those, can you link us to an event we can use to view the problem?

I tired a couple of events but I don’t see the specific questions you are referring to.

Apologies. OK this one is live now and I added a TEST for no cost- I ran a test and entered Test 1, Test 2, Test 3, Test 4, etc. into each of the possible TEXT boxes and submitted the form. My results only returned Test 1, Test 11 and Test 10. I can open the others too if it is needed.

((I ran the test twice and consistently only got test1, test 11 and test 10 –

Thanks for the link, this helps shed some light on what’s going on.

The reason the form data isn’t getting captured is because the same form fields (or as labeled in the Event Espresso admin, the Questions) are being reused in multiple question groups within the same registration form.

I’m afraid the forms system within Event Espresso 4 does not have the capability to reuse the same question across many different question groups when they’re included in the same question group.

The way forward will be to set up unique questions for use in each of the groups. So specifically, right now, there are multiple instances of an “Est. Date” question, and multiple instances of a “Family Name” question for each of these Question groups:
Rustic Centerpieces
12 x 36 Framed Sign Options
Round Serving Tray Options:
Canvas Pillow Design Options Side Two

You can add more questions and label them for the specific groups. For example these are all unique questions:
Est. Date for Rustic Centerpiece
Family Name for Rustic Centerpiece
Est. Date for Framed Sign
Family Name for Framed Sign
Est. Date for Serving Tray
Family Name for Serving Tray
Est. Date for Canvas Pillow
Family Name for Canvas Pillow

then assign each question to the matching question group, and remove the questions that were reused across many question groups.

Then the answers will be captured as expected.

Ok, thank you we weren’t aware of this. Also, is there a reason why it takes 30 seconds + for the form to process? It causes a lot of our clients to leave the registration before it’s finalized.

The slowness of your site was actually discussed with Michelle back in March. This was the last reply I sent via email about this:

Our demo sites run PHP 7. You can check out some of our demo sites (and try testing a registration) and you’ll see how fast it can be. Here’s a link to one of the demo sites on demoee.org that has events set up for testing at the moment:
http://demoee.org/barnwoodworkshop/events/

With regards to other plugins, you can contact the developers of the other plugins to find out whether their software is compatible with PHP 7. It’d also be good to contact the developer of the theme for the same reason.

Updating to PHP 7 may be only part of the solution if the web server is overloaded and/or mis-configured. The server administrator may be able to check the server’s logs to find any bottlenecks that cause the slowdowns and may have some solutions from that end.

Please take a moment and check the performance of our demo site (you can start a registration for this event:
https://demoee.org/barnwoodworkshop/events/build-your-own-board-workshop/
)

The demo site is running on a very modestly priced hosting plan available from Digital Ocean. You wouldn’t necessarily need to get a Digital Ocean droplet to get a faster site, but a conversation with your host about getting the right server for your needs will help.

After that message we upgraded our VPS to Php7 and had a conversation with our host all is fine there, but we didn’t see an improvement in the speed. Guess it depends on the amount of info in the registration form? 30 seconds seems like a bit much though.

It really does depend on the server with its capacity & resources, and configuration. The amount of info in the registration form might add a few milliseconds to the request.
