EEv4 backward Compatible with PHP?

Hi we had the EEv4 and we had thing pretty well ready to launch then when we logged into WordPress 4.1 we saw that the plugin was deactivated and when we went to activate it we now get this message.

We’re sorry, but Event Espresso requires PHP version 5.3.0 or greater in order to operate. You are currently running version 5.2.17.

Is this latest plugin now backwards compatible to ver 5.2?

We are in contact with host at BlueHost but according to info they are at 5.4 of php and ideas as to a solution if this is the case.
