Some attendees’ registrations are pumping out the same emails over and over. Like they are getting stuck in the email queue even after they’ve been sent. So event admin and attendee are both receiving the same email over and over.

Hi Chris,

Could you let us know the version of Event Espresso that you are using for your project and was this previously working as expected and has recently starting sending out extra notifications?

Thanks

Lorenzo

We’re using 4.9.8 WordPress 4.6
Not all registrations do this. The first we’ve seen of this was last Thursday. We’ve seen about 15-20 registrations since then but only 2 have had this problem.
Registrations ID numbers are all the same so it’s not multiple registrations it’s just the same email over and over just about every hour.

Hi Chris,

Do you have any form of caching enabled on the site, or does your host have object caching enabled on the server? We’ve seen this happen before with object caching.

Also, do you have access to the servers error logs? If so can you check for any timeout errors shown there.

We have no caching enable. We use SiteGround and their caching is disabled. We only have 4 server errors recently and they are clients denied by bulletproof security.

It could also be an issue with running crons on your site. In which case, you can change the Generate and send all messages: setting to be “On the same request” in Event Espresso > Messages > Settings, and that will help.

Thanks for the suggestion but after making that switch I am getting duplicate emails every 5 min instead of every hour.

Chris

They are for sure coming from the site too. I have a mail log plugin installed and i see them recorded in there.

Are they the Payment Received email and registration approved emails that get duplicated? If so, which payment method are you using?

Chris

August 25, 2016 at 11:34 am

No Payment methods other than invoice. The emails that appear to be duplicated are approved registration and the confirmation emails sent to the registrant.

Are you using a transactional email delivery service like PostMark, or is the server’s built-in email server being used on this site?

Also is your site part of a Multisite network installation of WordPress, or is this a single WordPress site?

Chris

August 29, 2016 at 7:45 am

It’s a single wordpress install and we are using the server’s built-in email server.

Can you check to see if the duplicates are showing in the message queue list table?

Chris

August 30, 2016 at 7:19 am

Yeah there is a problem there. We have 142 messages queued for sending dating back to 12 days ago.

Are they duplicates of messages that were sent though? If you can send admin level credentials from the secure form on this page we can investigate further.

Hey Chris,

It looks like someone wiped out the value for the Primary Contact Email input in Event Espresso > General Settings, and more than a few of your email message templates are using the
[CO_FORMATTED_EMAIL]
shortcode in the From: field. That’s going to result in a blank From: field in the email headers, which I can imagine will cause some email delivery issues.

Can you input an email address into that field and update the settings page? The noreply@ address being used for the From: field in some of the other message templates can be used there if you’d like. It will also make things a bit more consistent between emails if you use
[CO_EMAIL] instead of [CO_FORMATTED_EMAIL], since some of the message templates have an actual email address in the From field.

Thanks Josh,
I’ve made the change and we’ll see how it goes.

We’re still getting the emails. We’re going to have to figure something out soon. We have customers complaining about getting a crazy amount of emails.

Should I roll back to a previous version?

You’ll lose data if you roll back to a previous version.

You could try a transactional email service because the actual issue may be brought forth by the email server.

There are some great free/low cost transaction email services that you can use, and they’re outlined in this guide:

https://eventespresso.com/wiki/postmark-app-mandrill-transactional-email-handling-services/

Are you seeing this happening elsewhere. I’ve been told there is a bug with the latest version of wordpress that is causing mail issues.

Chris

Is there a way I can get them out of the Queued for Sending? there are 157 emails in there from all the way back to the 18th of august.

We’ve seen one other report. Are you referring to this bug?

https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/37736

The email issue that was fixed in the above ticket was caused by a new flag that was added to show who sent the email, which doesn’t function properly on all hosts. When you use a transactional email service, you’re not using the hosted email server.

You set the Screen Options > Pagination to 160, click Queued For Sending, check the box next to To, which will select all of them, then select Delete Messages, and click Apply.

That may be the bug. We aren’t running 4.6.1 I only see 4.6 available on w.org.

I’m not sure what the bug is exactly. We ran into another mail related issue where nothing was sending from a different host and they mentioned that there was a 4.6 bug that was forcing things to send via smtp. I think there was a bit of a language barrier in the conversation. But he was able to fix that issue.

I’ll delete the messages out of the queue for now. Do you think that will stop the ones that are still sending from old registrations?

I have a sendgrid account but am not in love with the idea of doing all that setup if this is a bug or weird plugin conflict.

When I look at my core files I did updated wordpress on 8-17 from what I’ve seen in the queue emails started getting stuck in queue on 8-18. So its plausible that the update could have caused this.
