I just got this error trying to update and now I have no EE at all

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /*redacted*/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso-core-reg/core/EE_System.core.php on line 161

YES! I have the exact same error. I’m trying to upload my site, which has been working just fine on my desktop localhost. I need to have this site working by Sunday, and today was my best time to get it launched for testing.

When I open the file and look at line 161, it says (without the comment framing)
/**
$psr4_loader = new \EventEspresso\Core\Psr4Autoloader;
*/

Mine won’t activate – http://www.advanceacademyonline.com So the people who visit don’t get to see the classes available.

Hi Adam and Convolution admin,

Can you find the PHP version that your server is running? If it’s an older version of PHP that would be the cause of the error you are seeing. If it’s an older version of PHP, updating to a newer version of will help, which that’s usually something your host can do.

Convolution admin: You can deactivate Event Espresso 4 manually by following this guide:

My PHP version on my server is 5.4.43 and I use Bluehost – what now?

Normally an error like the one you reported would only happen on a server running PHP 5.2 or lower. We can investigate further if you can send WP admin and FTP credentials via the secure form on this page:

Hi Adam,

Can you change the FTP account that you sent us so it has access to the files for Advance Academy site? The credentials you sent allow us to only FTP into an empty directory.

Along with that, it’d be good to contact Bluehost and ask them to check the PHP version that your website is on. The folder we do have access to says the server is on PHP 5.2.17.

Yes update to *redacted*
You should have access – On the PHP I contacted their support on chat and they reported back to me that my sites had 5.4.43

Hi Adam,

Your other site might have PHP 5.4.43, but the WordPress admin on the site you sent credentials to us says it’s on PHP 5.2.17:

Ok after extensive messing around with my hosting provider – we are now up and running! Thanks for pointing out where the problem was

You’re welcome,

I’m glad you were able to get that sorted out.
