We just purchased EE3 and want to know if we can install, test, and get familiar with EE3 on a development site before we take it live. We’ll need to use the license key to test the premium features and add-ons (free version won’t work for us).
Will we run into any problems when we switch from the development location/URL to the live location/URL since we have just a single site license?
It turns out you can install the premium version and all the add-ons and they will all “just work” without placing a license key on the dev site. The license key serves one function: Validation for 1-click updates. So unless you need to test 1-click updates, you can avoid placing the key on the dev site.
Josh – that makes sense. So we can test all the premium features and be fine as long as we don’t update on the dev site?
We already have the free version of EE3 running on the dev site (which is how we discovered we need Premium). I was under the impression that adding the license key to the site would unlock the premium features of the free version.
But to avoid complications when we go live, are you saying we should deactivate the free version and install the Premium version on the dev site (but don’t use the license key)? If so, will our existing events (from the free version) be preserved?
You can even update as updates become available on your dev site by manually updating the plugins.
In EE3, the upgrade path from lite to premium is deactivate the lite version, remove the plugin, and install the premium version plugin.
The events are stored in the database alongside the WordPress posts/pages in separate tables, so your events will be there after you upgrade.
