Hello sorry to post another one but I figured it would be more appropriate as a separate inquiry. My client was asking about the viability of downgrading from EE4 to an older version of EE4. If you have any insights on this, that would be greatly appreciated. I searched around on the forum but there were bits and pieces about people wanting to do this with most of them wanting to downgrade to EE3 which is not something I want to do.

Hi there,

Generally speaking, as long as you stay on EE4 and there have been no database migrations between the current version you are using and the version you want to downgrade to, it ‘should’ work.

When Event Espresso changes within the database we run a migration script to update the database, if you then use an older version which expects the database setup in the ‘old’ way, things break. Fortunately, it’s usually easy to know as each migration is triggered with a ‘major’ version change number.

EE4.9.XX -> 4.10.XX wont work, the version number going from 9 to 10 there usually signifies a database change.

4.10.38 -> 4.10.14 should, because there’s no major version number change.

Doing so isn’t really recommended because we support the latest version of Event Espresso but having read over your other thread (HERE, which I’m about to investigate and reply to) I assume the issues mentioned there are why you are asking this and understand why you would want to try a previous version to confirm it.

Thanks Tony, yes this was the other option they were considering in case it is something to do with the EE update. That’s pretty much what I gathered as well that if the version gap is too large, database changes might be too substantial. I suppose the first thing for me to figure out here is what version it was on prior. I would say ideally, it would be good if things were working normally on an up to date version of the plugin. But if we were to decide this, would we have to perhaps request an old version of the plugin?

For context as well it looks like we are coming from 4.10.13 and we are currently on 4.10.36

There are no database migrations between those 2 versions but we do have a lot of bug fixes and sanitation between those.

I suppose the first thing for me to figure out here is what version it was on prior.

Just in case you don’t know EE stores the activation history.

Event Espresso -> Maintenance -> System Information

Search ‘ee activation history’ and you’ll see the version number and date it was activated.

I would say ideally, it would be good if things were working normally on an up to date version of the plugin.

If we find a bug here we will make sure it’s fixed so either way, you would end up back on the ‘latest’ version ๐Ÿ˜‰

But if we were to decide this, would we have to perhaps request an old version of the plugin?

Sure, I can send you previous versions ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Tony I will let you know if I need a copy of that, not sure if those versions exist on your github repo somewhere but I can check that too. But at this point I would say downgrading will be a last resort, do let me know if you need more information from me

Hi there,

I am Joao from the Event Espresso support.

As Tony mentioned, you will be using the latest version at some time since we’re constantly releasing minor versions containing important bug fixes. However, I’ve forwarded the Event Espresso 4.10.13 to brian@salazarbzd.com (don’t worry, this is a private reply that just our staff and you can view).

Thank you Joao I saw that you did share that with me, I appreciate help, I will make sure to keep this if we do decide to go the downgrade route
