I have pasted my license key into Event Espresso/General Settings and saved but can’t get it to activate. I am therefore also unable to update the software.

Hi Claire, your support license is for version 4 so you won’t be able to update Event Espresso 3 using your support license.
If you would like to continue using Event Espresso 3, then please contact us here so we can provide some options for switching to a support license for Event Espresso 3:
