Following an upgrade from 4.8.31.p to 4.8.36.p I am now getting this error:
IPN Validation failed! Paypal responded with ‘WP Error. Code: “http_request_failed”, Message: “SSL connect error”, Data: “”‘
and the transaction status shows “abandoned” the cart was working for a while prior to the update.
Do I need to change something on the PP side post update?
Dev site with error (cart set to sandbox)

Hi Maureen,
It turns out the error you’re seeing while using PayPal Sandbox are the result of the changes to PayPal Sandbox that went into effect on January 16, 2016.
These were recent security upgrades that PayPal rolled out to PayPal Sandbox and will later roll out to the live PayPal servers. So if your server isn’t updated, it will eventually not allow your server to connect with PayPal for live payments as well.

Can you contact your host to see if your server can be updated to meet the specifications outlined in the above post?
