I’ve been trying to figure out how to configure the events for a movie theater with EE4 since it looks like at this time the recurring feature is not an option for EE4.

We have 12 auditoriums and we have an average of 4 showtimes per day per auditorium, that’s 336 shows per week.

Should I create all 336 separate events, or is there a way to create only 12 events (one per movie title) and have multiple dates/times for each showtime.

Please take a look of our showtimes at http://www.venturecinema.net/showtimes/

Thanks,
Eduardo

UPDATE. I created an event called BRIDGE OF SPIES (PG13) and added several Datetimes. Usually there are either 3 or 4 shows per day.

http://www.venturecinema.net/events/bridge-of-spies-pg13/

I noticed that during the checkout process THERE’S NO WAY for the people to pick a particular datetime, so I’m guessing that the number of available spaces for a particular datetime will be updated until the person checks-in at the theater and the barcode is read.

Now, if this is correct, I’d like to know if is there a way to set it up in such way that people MOST pick a datetime BEFORE they checkout, that way, they know what show they’re attending, and also the rest of the people attending a particular datetime will know if is there still spaces available.

This is particularly important for people that wants to attend to a particular datetime, let’s say the 7:30 pm show, but if they’re not allowed to pick the datetime in advance, they might left out if other people attended the same event before they did, so they most likely are going to be upset and will be forced to either attend to a later show or even ask for a refund.

I really appreciate your help in this matter, since this issue alone is the most important for us to decide if Event Espresso is the right solution for us.

Thanks,
Eduardo

UPDATE. I created an event where I try to avoid the problem mentioned above. Instead of creating several datetimes, I created several tickets, one for each date and time. This way people must choose a particular showtime (event).

The only downside is that by default EE4 adds one datetime that cannot be removed and this could cause confusion, so I set it as a date range of a whole week and made a note letting people know that the date range indicates for how long the movie is going to be screened in our theater.

Here’s the event’s page: http://www.venturecinema.net/events/pan-pg/

I know this is not ideal, but for now I can use it this way, while EE developers provide a better solution for movie theaters and similar businesses that host multiple events per day/week.

Any other ideas are really appreciated.

Regards,
Eduardo

Hi Eduardo,

Now, if this is correct, I’d like to know if is there a way to set it up in such way that people MOST pick a datetime BEFORE they checkout, that way, they know what show they’re attending, and also the rest of the people attending a particular datetime will know if is there still spaces available.

To do that you would need to create individual tickets assigned to each datetime, so then the user could select the tickets for that specific datetime. However this will work if there is only a single ticket for each datetime, but once you get onto multiple tickets the ticket selector is going to start getting busy quickly.

For example here is an event with 2 datetime – http://take.ms/LldZb

Notice the ‘First Datetime’ have the DT1 tickets assigned to it.

You can do the same for another datetime – http://take.ms/QSkAL

So only sales for those specific tickets apply to their specific datetime.

Heres the Ticket selector view – http://take.ms/03Jag

So those tickets could be Adult and Child for each individual showing.

However, at 3 showings a day * X amount of tickets per showing * X amount of days its going to cause the tickets selector to get busy.

The only downside is that by default EE4 adds one datetime that cannot be removed and this could cause confusion, so I set it as a date range of a whole week and made a note letting people know that the date range indicates for how long the movie is going to be screened in our theater.

Tickets must be assigned to at least one datetime so you can not remove the final datetime. Setting the datetime as a range as you have done should work fine, your using the ticket limits for each show now, correct?

Eventually when we support recurring events we would also like to alter the ticket selecotr to allow the users to select a specific date to see the tickets for, allowing for more granular control, take a look here for further details:

Tony, thanks for sharing this info. You’re correct, at this time I’m using one datetime for the whole week and I limit the tickets’ availability dates and quantities for each show.

I look forward for the recurring events add-on that will help me a lot.

That should work with your setup as you only have a single ticket type for each slot (not adult, child, concession etc). If you had more you would need to monitor the ticket limits to prevent overselling.

I look forward for the recurring events add-on that will help me a lot.

Me too 🙂

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
