Hello EE Team! I just upgraded my EE plugin to Version 3.1.36.5.P and the plugin will not activate because it “triggered a fatal error”. Does anyone have insight or a solution for this problem? Thanks in advance for your help. |
Hi David, How are you today? Did the fatal error provide any additional information? How many times did you try to activate 3.1.36.5 and did the same thing happen? What version were you upgrading from? We’ve had a lot of people upgrade recently and this is the first report (that I’m aware of) so any more information would be helpful. |

Garth! Hey good to hear from you. All was well until… Warning: require_once(includes/shortcodes.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /xx/theduluthexperience.com/html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso/espresso.php on line 418 Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘includes/shortcodes.php’ (include_path=’.xx’) in /xx/theduluthexperience.com/html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/event-espresso/espresso.php on line 418

I was upgrading from 3.1.36.4 and I got the same error message on three attempts to install. |
In your download files. Do you have the following file? Includes > shortcodes.php It seems that file is missing, but it exists in the file I downloaded from EventEspresso.com. Did you try upgrading via one-click upgrades or by downloading the file from EventEspresso.com and uploading the files via the WordPress Admin or via FTP? |
I did the one-click upgrade through the WP admin panel. |
Can you tell me whether that file does exist on the server, or will you try downloading from EventEspresso.com and manually installing? |
no. when i look in the folder includes, i don’t see the shortcodes.php file. |
That’s rare, but if the update process gets interrupted this can happen. You should be able to deactivate, delete, download and install a fresh copy of ee, they can do that right from your wp plugins page or manually install it as mentioned above. |
In fact, it appears to be missing quite a few of the files in the downloaded zip file from the Event Espresso site. Do you recommend deleting the current version from my WordPress and reloading it from the zip file? |
Will I loose data from EE if I do that Garth? |
You will not lose the data if you delete the plugin. |
Thanks Garth. You’re a stud. I’ll give it a try. |
You won’t lose any data because the data is stored in the database, which is in a separate location from the Event Espresso plugin. You can deactivate, delete, and upload/install a fresh copy of ee right from your wp plugins page. |

Back up and running! Thanks for the help. |
Sure. Let us know if we can do anything else. Setting this thread to Resolved. |
